I tried copying and pasting complex texts in the app. The summarised version was just the first part of the text, word for word. Has anyone used it in any way that showed the apps usefulness?

Richard Byrne always has great ideas about using technology in the classroom. ReadWorks.org is a great find offering a FREE lesson plans for grades K-6 that are built around reading strategies/skills aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The lessons are indexed by strategy/skill and by grade. Many lessons provide offer more than one text suggestion with links to the texts. Some are immediately available as a PDF and others link to online sources (you may have to purchase, but at least you don't have to search the internet to find them). The site also provides space for feedback on each lesson. This rich resource is worth your time of investigation!

I am a longtime fan of Kylene Beers and Bob Probst. This blog gives a quick rundown of the basic tenets of their highly popular book, Notice and Note and shares an instructional activity. You'll want to go out and buy the book!

Close reading using Six Signposts! Great strategy!!

Linda Burke Dooling's curator insight, January 26, 2014 4:27 PM

Students need to develop the skills to notice/note what is important -- in literature and in non-fiction -- by themselves. This is a tool that can help learn how to do this and also to practice doing it.

Only a few more hours to complete the survey and include your views regarding grade-level-performance descriptors. I dare you to take a look. If you are familiar with your grade level standards, I promise you, it won't take much time. I'd share my views, but don' t want to influence your thinking. I will say...lots of repetition...hope most people don't print the documents out!

The documents found here were included for the most part on the initial RFP awarded to ETS and Pearson. However, that document was housed not on the PARCC website. Convenient location with documents separated by purpose. Both Math and ELA can be found here among the PowerPoints and PDFs: http://www.parcconline.org/assessment-blueprints-test-specs

What do you make of them?
Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's comment, May 2, 2013 5:51 PM
The language of argument theory seems so convoluted: claims and subclaims. I'm not sure if the language was intended to intimidate, but that can be a rhetorical device of argument itself. Even within the documents published by PARCC is a suggestion to teachers that they concern themselves with the standards more than understanding these docs. The docs themselves...really frame in what combinations the standards should be applied to drive assessment. Seems logical and if I were a teacher, a framework on which I would develop units.
