As an English teacher who holds a master’s degree in writing, I’m grateful and inspired by the Common Core’s focus on writing skills.

Common Core, in 9-Year-Old Eyes (& the Fight by a few States to Drop-Out)

Linda Alexander's curator insight, June 15, 2014 11:41 AM

After years of rote learning, the Common Core asks children to become nimble, more abstract thinkers equipped for the modern age. However, the greater expectations has caused a handful of anxious states, fearing a drop in test results and for the first time national comparisons, to come up with often ridiculous arguments in order to drop out.

The test were created in 2009 by a group of education experts, with the backing of the National Governors Association and Chief State of School Officers and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. (NOTE: The Obama administration played NO role in drafting the guidelines).  In March of this year, "Indiana became the first state to abandon the CC, followed by South Carolina and Oklahoma."  Arizona seems poised to follow suit.  Overall, where school funding is weak and national score comparisons are viewed as a frightening prospect, counter arguments against the Common Core seem to run rampant. Teachers often have to relearn how to present materials and professional development is key.  Rote instructional strategies are much, much easier---asking children to think, use evidence, predict, and support their arguments is daunting to some folks.  Ultimately, a transition period will be required, but the backlash is mostly born out of fear and politics....and an uneducated news media and public that reinforces these notions.

As we adapt to the Common Core, our traditional grading system of A-F is on the chopping block, and rightfully so. This system, grading on a curve, has tended to perpetuate the status quo.
