"In thinking recently of all of the different strands of digital citizenship–human, legal, media-based, technological, and so on–it occurred to me that citizenship online was really not much different than citizenship in person.

That is, it’s complicated."

Report finds more LA school libraries closed

Report finds more LA school libraries closed | Common Core and the Elementary School Library | Scoop.it
It took school board member Monica Ratliff's office months of phone calls to find out how many libraries do not have staff: 332. Now, she wants to get them reopened.

Figures out this week show only half of L.A. Unified school libraries have even part-time staff and far fewer have a credentialed librarian.

In a district of 768 schools libraries, there are only 98 librarians to teach students how to find information, select a text or coordinate reading programs. Even adding library aides to the mix, 332 school libraries do not have staff.

congerjan's insight:

In PA we need only show parents the PSSA scores of schools with and without school libraries. It is simple close libraries = lower PSSA scores. Parents need to know that. Librarians do more than stand at a desk and check out books!

This article outlines the issues with just finding out what is happening in schools.

"Ratliff said she had heard from parents about closures at their schools, but it took her office months to get data showing the scope of library cuts. "Basically we just kept hounding and hounding the district staff until we got the information," she said."

Flipped classroom <>flipped school library

Flipped classroom <>flipped school library | Common Core and the Elementary School Library | Scoop.it

Flipping the classroom changes the place in which content is delivered. If the teacher assigns lecture-type, frontal instruction–in the form of video, simulations, slidecasts, readings, podcasts–as homework, then class time can be used interactively. The class becomes conversation space, creation space, space where teachers actively facilitate learning.

Flipping frees face-to-face classroom time for interactive and applied learning, activities that inspire critical thinking, exploration, inquiry, discussion, collaboration, problem solving.  So, the classroom and the library become more learner-centered.
