The rise of technologies like the beacon, heat mapping and information kiosks have painted a high-tech picture for the future for retail.
Craig Kauffman's insight:

Wired published a good piece on iBeacons. That said, I think it was a bit pessimistic around when and if Main Street retailers will use. The technology is starting to mature, but the cost is not really that prohibitive for smaller retailers. If a smaller retailer who is struggling with their POS and other systems to run their stores, they should scrap their POS and implementing a more omni-channel solution leveraging iBeacons. Replacing their POS with their eCommerce solution and leveraging iBeacons could cost a bit more but would allow the smaller retailer to not only connect with their customers easily, but could resolve their current operational issues as well. I just attended Luxury Interactive in NYC the past couple days where Elastic Path showcased their eCommerce solution leveraging iBeacons in their "Store of the Future". They highlighted how simple and inexpensive it was to integrate these innovations into their platform.  I think the total cost of ownership in pursuing these omni-channel solutions is much less than the author thinks. Just one boy's opinion.
