Over 600 children aged 9 to 17 used monitors which kept track of their levels of physical activity for 7 days. They also got their waist circumference, weight as well as blood pressure monitored on a regular basis.

 

It was determined that the kids spent nearly 70% of their time carrying out sedentary activities; almost 23% was focused on light physical activity; nearly 7% on moderate physical activity and 0.6% on vigorous physical activity.

Remember to keep your kids moving. Limit screen time and encourage movement. I love a home dance party with the kids.

According to the research, there were not the expected health benefits from performing only mild or moderate activity whether or not the time spent increased.  Participating in intense physical activity appeared to be critical. 


Unfortunately, the article does not give examples for what they consider vigorous physical activity.  I would recommend 30 second intervals of jumping jacks, push ups, or running in place, followed by 30 seconds of rest.  I would do sets of 15 as this adds up to just over 7 minutes of vigorous excercise.  

 

As the child gets more fit and older, they can increase the number of sets and/or the intensity of each rep.

How I fit my workouts in is important to me. Only one day did I miss a morning workout...after a 12 hour day the day before there was just no way I could get out of the bed without feeling like I was so tired my eyelashes hurt.
