Being in the EU Means More Opportunities for Young Brits

Being in the EU Means More Opportunities for Young Brits | Combating Youth Inequalities through Social Innovative Practices | Scoop.it
Those fundamentally opposed to the EU say we should turn our backs on the world and become more inwardly focused. But Liberal Democrats believe that the best way to increase opportunities for young people is by having a strong voice in Brussels and working together with our European neighbours. Ukip offer nothing to young people; leaving the EU would reduce job opportunities in the UK and take away their right to work, study or train freely in 27 other European countries, including through Erasmus+.
CITISPYCE's insight:

Even if the writer of this article is bias towards voting for the Lib Dems, this article does fit in well with the EU Seminar Series we are running for young people across Birmingham, UK. Young people are already finding it extremely difficult to find jobs in the UK and across Europe; and this difficulty would be even greater if we are no longer part of the EU. The EU offers lots of benefits for young people and this is something young people should be aware of.

We have witnessed many youth clubs shutting down due to cuts in funding. It is important that youth clubs continue to run so that we are able to meet young people's needs. If churches can help save youth clubs we should try and support them!

Fall in young learning after 17

Fewer young people are still learning after 17, survey suggests

Via Mighty Rasing
CITISPYCE's insight:

Continuing education may be an easy option for many students, however, for others it might not. There may be many issues which stop young people continuing education such as having no guidance, money, family background and peer group; therefore, we need to find a way of engaging with all young people and help them see the importance of education in relation to their life chances.

Mga tropa, are you still learning?

According to some studies, a lot of young people are no longer learning beyond the age of 17.

Alarming naman yan.

For me, it's fulfilling to learn something new, unlearn bad habits, get new skills and do something new. It brings excitement and a worthy use of my time.

Siempre, learning is not just about reading books or attending classes. It means understanding a little bit more about our world and finding our place in it.

With no work at home, young Spaniards flee to London | Combating Youth Inequalities through Social Innovative Practices | Scoop.it
CITISPYCE's insight:

It's terrible to see that young people are struggling to find jobs in their own countries. This article ties in well with the EU seminar series Jill Robinson is running this year, which emphasises to young people the benefits of being part of the EU. Without freedom of movement these young Spaniards would still be struggling to find a job, but by being part of the EU they have managed to find a job in the UK and can continue living their lives!

Youth services funds 'cut by £438m'

Youth services funds 'cut by £438m' | Combating Youth Inequalities through Social Innovative Practices | Scoop.it
The amount of money spent on services for teenagers in England has fallen by 36% in the past two years, according to figures released to the BBC.
CITISPYCE's insight:

It's a great shame that youth services are being cut, especially since now young people will have nowhere to go. Fiona Black, chief executive of the National Youth Agency, said that "cuts will lead to long-term problems such as an increase in criminal behaviour". What people do not realise is that youth services provide young people a place of socialisation, security and skilled learning. They also offer support programmes for those individuals who find it difficult to get the support they need if they searched elsewhere. Therefore, we should not be cutting youth services, but we should be supporting them and developing them for future generations.

CITISPYCE's insight:

Mighty Rasing's curator insight, September 3, 2013 9:14 PM

In the UK, apprenticeship is on the rise. This is like TESDA training here in the Philippines. University education is expensive so this kind of training can help young people upgrade their skills and land jobs faster.

“I don't think I needed university. I wanted to learn on the job and develop myself, rather than wasting four years. It's given me the chance of dealing with professional clients everyday."

“Apprenticeships are fast becoming the norm for young people seeking an alternative route to a career than via university. They are a great way for young people to earn while they learn in a real job, gaining a real qualification, setting them on the road to success in their chosen career.”
