Mr. Langdon’s welding students received their mission, and they chose to accept: create a sturdy, curved, metal display board capable of handling multiple tasks – and a school of fish.

 

They didn’t have much time; their assignment needed to be finished and in place for the grand re-opening of the Belle Isle Aquarium on September 15th. Donors’ “fish” needed to be pinned up as goodwill funds poured in – if the Aquarium was to survive, charitable contributions had to be visibly encouraged.

The Business, Management, Marketing & Technology students at Oakland Schools Technical Campus-Northeast needed a hook to jumpstart their “Making a Difference” food drive effort for the Baldwin Center’s holiday boxes and the Lighthouse of Oakland County Food Pantry. The near universal student familiarity with PB & J offered up a creative call-to-action for campus and community donations.

 

“The students’ marketing ideas tied in with what they’ve learned in the classroom. Their work was entirely hands-on and practical,” said Instructor Elizabeth Diehl. “Their involvement fueled their enthusiasm for this project – the students even volunteered to go offsite to assist Genisys, our sponsor, with their office collection.”

For the second year, students at the Oakland Schools Technical Campus-Northwest teamed up on Student Appreciation Day to collect non-perishable food items for Lighthouse of Oakland County-Clarkston.

 

“We set aside this day to show our appreciation to the students who attend our campus. It was a great day for everyone as students were able to enjoy apple cider and donuts and, this year, give back to the community,” said Debbie Backy, chairperson of the Student Appreciation Committee.

The results are up for the Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association (OCCRA) tournament season opener at Rochester Adams High School, and Team #123 from Oakland Schools Technical Campus-Southwest grabbed FIRST PLACE by a large margin!

 

Congratulations to OSTC-SW for building a tough robot and taking a commanding lead in a highly competitive division!

Oakland Schools Technical Campuses (OSTC) partnered with Oakland University's School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS) to create a series of summer camps for high school students interested in science and engineering.

 

These are definitely not the craft, archery and swimming day camps typically associated with summer break, but the opportunity to spend a couple of weeks delving into hands-on, high-tech projects has found enthusiastic student support.

On the very chilly Saturday, October 13th, ten OSTC-NE Health Science students took time off of work and out of their weekend to represent Oakland Schools at the Oakland County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Oakland University in Auburn Hills.

 

Making Strides is a powerful and inspiring community event that not only honors breast cancer survivors, but helps to raise the money and public awareness needed to defeat the disease.
