"The 15 January deadline is fast approaching. The deadline has probably been seared into your memories by your schools, colleges and advisers so you probably don't need another reminder! Instead I've gathered together the sort of issues that've cause applications to be submitted late in previous years and given some advice on how to prevent them happening to you!"
I wasn't perturbed by comments like "Is that a lesbian college?" or "Ew, you'll never see boys!" or "Why would you go to a women's college?" I knew most of my peers thought I was crazy, but I didn't care.

An often overlooked college option for students: Women's and Men's Colleges
"Extracurricular activities are being withdrawn in Ontario schools, as they were in British Columbia’s labour dispute last spring. But educators increasingly see these “extras” as essential to producing an engaged, 21st-century student. And some are already compensating teachers for leading them.
When critical thinking, leadership and interpersonal skills are seen as key to future success, students clearly are missing out on more than basketball practice and high-school musicals."
I have a student who got an e-mail from Pepperdine this morning. It read:
"...Being proactive is an important skill that many students do not develop until college. Thank you for demonstrating your interest and responsibility by completing your Pepperdine application with time to spare. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed."
Kudos to Pepperdine for the positive message to proactive high school students!
"When I close my eyes, a game of Tetris appears. The blocks fall flawlessly. Each one perfectly fits into the contour created by the previous blocks. The structure has no lapses.
When I’m actually playing the game, however, the situation is different. The descending block does not always find its place in the structure I construct. It’s usually my fault: I misjudged the situation, failed the plan in advance, or expected something different."

Great perspective from an international student applying to universities within the Unites States.
"The University of Iowa is today announcing the addition of an optional question on sexual orientation, and a transgender choice under gender, as part of an effort to make its undergraduate application one that sends a welcoming signal to all students -- and to gather information about the institution's success at attracting and retaining students who aren't straight."
Impact of Major on Career Path for 15600 Williams College Alums
"This visualization is work with my students Hayley Brooks '12 and Kaison Tanabe '13...The left side of the circle is broken into 15 parts, each representing a grouping of all majors available at Williams...The right side of the circle is similarly broken into 15 parts, each representing a grouping of possible careers chosen by Williams alums."
"The University of California has introduced a logo for the system. The current symbol is based on the institution’s 140-year-old coat of arms. The new one is based on, well, nothing at all except graphic design principles."
Thanh-Tran Nguyen, a high school senior in Seattle who would be the first in her immediate family to attend a four-year college, "could theoretically be happy anywhere, but thinking like that is both a blessing and a curse."...
