If every school library looked like what Joyce Valenza is describing, our profession would not be on the endangered species list.

Love that the definition of digital literacy comes from a resource published in 1997. The essence is the same, no matter the format or the new technologies.

A new Follett-sponsored initiative aims to raise awareness of how important school librarians are to the success of digital learning.

School librarians are critical to the success of digital learning initiatives, and they deserve a place at the table in discussions about digital learning: That’s the message behind a new awareness campaign that targets K-12 superintendents and other senior school district leaders.

School libraries and teacher-librarians: evidence of their contribution to student literacy and learning

School libraries have the potential to be a vibrant hub for learning, information, reading promotion, creativity, student leadership and social interaction within their school community. From an equity perspective, the school library is one of few places in a school open to all students, teachers and parents. In addition to providing a congenial learning environment and ‘safe haven’, the school library often offers a venue for extra-curricular activities, as well as school community events and meetings.

Great to see this research being done closer to home and showing again the value of school libraries as a central hub of the school.

Common Core & School Wide Literacy Thrusts Librarians Into Leadership Role

Common Core & School Wide Literacy Thrusts Librarians Into Leadership Role | college and career ready | Scoop.it

By Catherine Gewertz

Education Week

Already equipped with inquiry-based skills, librarians are helping teachers acquire the instructional methods they need to adopt.

-------

Literacy is the "common ground of the common core" (Janet Allen) and the expectation is that literacy is now a shared responsibility among all teachers. That means that close reading, writing, listening, speaking, and collaborating should be a normal part of instruction in every classroom every day.

The minute we gave our teachers the results of our school wide diagnostic assessment and taught them how to determine the text complexity of their course materials and the expected comprehension level of the students, they made a beeline for the library. Instead of being a nicety, our librarian instantly became a necessity to quality instruction in every classroom.
