I’m spending the next five days with the Thinking Social team at the University of Florida. We’re engaging in some pretty innovative research with the residence life department, working on some “think-tanky” stuff, and connecting with the Education Technology department for a lunch and learn. We’ve been a bit secretive on Twitter, so we’d like to invite everyone at home to participate in a conversation about social media in higher education on Saturday, August 13 at 4:00PM EST. Watch live on Ustream.
The TED-Ed Brain Trust is a private forum created to shape and accelerate TED's push into the realm of Education. The aim of this community is to assemble a new archive of remarkable TED-ED videos, each designed to catalyze learning around the globe.
A guide to the next great wave of technology—an era of objects so programmable that they can be regarded as material instantiations of an immaterial system. The future will see a new kind of object—we have the primitive forms of them now in our pockets and briefcases: user-alterable, baroquely multi-featured, and programmable—that will be sustainable, enhanceable, and uniquely identifiable. Sterling coins the term "spime" for them, these future manufactured objects with informational support so extensive and rich that they are regarded as material instantiations of an immaterial system. Spimes are designed on screens, fabricated by digital means, and precisely tracked through space and time. They are made of substances that can be folded back into the production stream of future spimes, challenging all of us to become involved in their production.
Holacracy offers a comprehensive practice for governing and running our organizations. Its transformative structure and processes integrate the collective wisdom of people throughout the company, while aligning the organization with its broader purpose and a more organic way of operating. Holacracy takes the principles, ideas, and emerging mindset articulated by many cutting-edge thought leaders, and instills them in the actual structures and processes of the organization. This grounds them in practice and brings them to life, and the result is dramatically increased agility, transparency, innovation, and accountability.
To help clarify the key differences between Holacracy and Sociocracy, HolacracyOne’s Brian Robertson sat down with Bernard Marie Chiquet, an experienced Sociocracy consultant and trainer who has completed the Holacracy certification process as well.
“Holopticism -- the link between individuals and the whole -- provide players the capacity to operate in a sovereign independant way because they know what to do for the sake of the whole and the sake of themselves. Therefore there is not only horizontal transparency (perception of every other participants), but also a vertical communication with the emerging Whole.” (http://wiki.thetransitioner.org/English/Holopticism)
While there are various differences concerning the number of stages and their names - many have adopted a version of Tuckman's model - forming, storming, norming and performing. He was later to add a fifth stage - adjourning (Tuckman and Jensen 1977).
The TEDActive Education Project will explore how children can make an impact on the education system. We hope to come out of this project with fresh ideas for ways kids can start an education revolution.
Artist Aaron Koblin takes vast amounts of data -- and at times vast numbers of people -- and weaves them into stunning visualizations. From elegant lines tracing airline flights to landscapes of cell phone data, from a Johnny Cash video assembled from crowd-sourced drawings to the "Wilderness Downtown" video that customizes for the user, his works brilliantly explore how modern technology can make us more human.
L’Holacracy
Spiral Dynamics argues that human nature is not fixed: humans are able, when forced by life conditions, to adapt to their environment by constructing new, more complex, conceptual models of the world that allow them to handle the new problems. Each new model transcends and includes all previous models. According to Beck and Cowan, these conceptual models are organized around so-called vMemes: systems of core values or collective intelligences, applicable to both individuals and entire cultures.
In spiral dynamics, the term vMeme refers to a core value system, acting as an organizing principle, which expresses itself through memes (self-propagating ideas, habits, or cultural practices). The prepended and superscripted letter v indicates these are not basic memes but value systems which include them. The colors act as reminders for the Life Conditions and Mind Capacities of each system and alternate between cool and warm colors as a part of the model.
How are we to approach groups? In this article we review the development of theory about groups. We look at some different definitions of groups, and some of the key dimensions to bear in mind when thinking about them.
