The international exhibition 'Caratteri da Collezione”, the contemporary han calligraphy biennial, will be open to the public in Florence from Thursday the 17th to Monday the 28th of July.
Two locations have been chosen for this great exhibition which, for the second consecutive year, looks at the subject and forms of collecting in order to show the public the excellence and vitality of the most prominent of the Chinese fine arts: the prestigious Sala d’Arme at the Palazzo Vecchio and the museum that Frederick Stibbert left to the city of Florence, proof of nineteenth-century eclectic collecting at its highest level.
One hundred contemporary calligraphers will be present for the occasion, mostly from China and Korea: great personalities and young artists alike, who have created works exclusively for this 2014 Biennial, inspired by the most ancient collection of Chinese poetry, the unfailing inspiration of later literature: the Book of Odes (Shijing) (XI-VI century BC).
Calligraphy is an artistic experience of primary importance in the development of Far Eastern culture and is today recognised by UNESCO as an intangible asset for our cultural heritage. By its very nature it is different from writing. It is not simply a communication tool but an action that combines artistic expression and spiritual energy.
With this art, with the interaction of mind and body, your thinking enters a new realm.

Marco, Florence.
In hewing [the wood for] an axe-handle , how do you proceed ? Without [another] axe it cannot be done . In taking a wife , how do you proceed ? Without a go-between it cannot be done . (Shijing, XI-VI century BC).
Come fare un manico d’ascia? Senz’ascia non si può. Come fare a prendere moglie? Senza un mediatore non si può. (Shijing, XI-VI sec. a.C.).
