How to Build Trust in a Virtual Workplace

How to Build Trust in a Virtual Workplace | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it

Teams can't function well when co-workers don't trust one another. Building and maintaining trust in the traditional, physical workplace is difficult enough, but the process is even tougher in a virtual environment, where people often have to work with people they haven't met in person.

Some biologists believe that we are hardwired to distrust everyone except our own family members. Studies have shown, however, that trust can indeed be actively accelerated and maintained on virtual teams even when they have to be assembled on the fly with employees scattered across the globe.

Great blog post by Keith Ferrazzi.

He mentions 4 best practices that can help establishing trust in virtual organisations.

After re-purposing a computer challenge-response test so that each human-typed response helps digitise books, Luis von Ahn wondered how else to use small contributions by many on the Internet for the greater good.

His ambitious new project, Duolingo, will help millions learn a new language while translating the Web quickly and accurately – all for free.

Groups and Gossip Drove the Evolution of Human Nature

Groups and Gossip Drove the Evolution of Human Nature | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it

Altruistic punishment and the spread of information about non-cooperators through gossip appears to be important components of human cooperation (and Robin Dunbar has made the case that gossip may be at the root of human spoken communication). -- Howard

"What makes these violations of moral rules so instructive is how societies choose to deal with them. Ultimately, it all comes down to gossip. More than tool-making, art, or even language, gossip is a human universal that is a defining feature of our species (though this could change if we ever learn to translate the complex communication system in whales or dolphins). Gossip is intimately connected with the moral rules of a given society, and individuals gain or lose prestige in their group depending on how well they follow these rules. This formation of group opinion is something to be feared, particularly in small rural communities where ostracism or expulsion could mean death. "Public opinion, facilitated by gossiping, always guides the band's decision process," Boehm writes, "and fear of gossip all by itself serves as a preemptive social deterrent because most people are so sensitive about their reputations." A good reputation enhances the prestige of those individuals who engage in altruistic behavior, while marginalizing those with a bad reputation. Since prestige is intimately involved with how desirable a person is to the opposite sex, gossip serves as a positive selection pressure for enhancing traits associated with altruism. That is, being good can get you laid, and this will perpetuate your altruistic genes (or, at least, those genes that allow you to resist cheating other members of your group)."

Storylane Prompts You to Share Your Life Story, One Question at a Time

Storylane Prompts You to Share Your Life Story, One Question at a Time | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it
Storylane encourages users to go beyond posting status updates and instead dive deeper into the narrative of their life.

If you added up all the updates you’ve posted to Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and other social networks, would it tell a complete and compelling story of your life? Jonathan Gheller bets the answer to that is no.

Gheller, a serial entrepreneur who founded companies like Fashmash and Mixtent, launched a new social network in beta this week called Storylane, which encourages users to go beyond posting status updates and instead dive deeper into the narratives of their lives.

“At Storylane we are building a library of human experiences by crafting a community where people can share things that really matter,” Gheller told Mashable. It’s an ambitious goal to say the least, but after playing around on the site for a few minutes, it starts to seem a little more attainable.

The Social Customer Service Conflict

The Social Customer Service Conflict | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it

The Social Customer Engagement Index examines how companies are using social tools for customer service and, more importantly, how customers are responding.

The Index uncovered that while intentions to improve customer engagement and relationships via social run high among executives, the reality is that businesses aren’t putting their investments where their aspirations are:

71% of businesses claim to use social media for customer service and 87.5% have realized a positive impact.

Of those businesses that participated in the study, 36% state that response times are as fast as an hour or less. Another 32.5% assert that a response will occur in less than four hours and 26% will try to get back to customers within a day.

Becoming a social business isn’t dependent on whether or not some of your team uses social networks for marketing, sales, or service here and there.

A social business is a way of business. It’s a philosophy.

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC]

10 Amazing #SocialMedia Statistics [INFOGRAPHIC] | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it
Did you know that Twitter is grabbing more new registrations than Facebook, with more than half of its entire userbase compromised of people who have signed up in the last year, compared to just 19 percent for Mark Zuckerberg’s baby?

What if I said that almost a quarter (23 percent) of Facebook users check their account five or more times each day, Twitter users are 33 percent more likely to be Democrats or – sorry Foursquare – that 74 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of ‘checking in’.

These, and several other amazing social media statistics, can be found in the infographic on social media statistics...

If you approach your collaboration strategy with a “one-size-fits-all” mentality, your rollout is far more likely to fail. Within an organization, there exist all different types of users that each prefer to work in their own unique ways – some prefer to work in groups, others in silos, some on iPads, others on pen and paper.
