These three parts presentation slides show how organisations can better use social media to help their people sharing their knowledge.  One point I like about what they suggested is they see social media not as individual tool but a collective tools to do KM.  Some organisations use social media separately: a blog is a blog and a wiki is a wiki.  The power of social media only can be seen when they are used in a mix and match style that suit your needs.

The other important point they made is knowledge management is not about capturing knowledge and put it somewhere, but to connect the knowledge seekers and knowledge providers.  Knowledge is only valuable when being used.

Exploring and Defining Influence: A New Study

Exploring and Defining Influence: A New Study | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it

The word influence as well as the individuals referred to as new influencers are elusive in terms of standard definition. Finding a common understanding and meaning is easier said than done. Influence itself is undergoing reexamination to better understand the diversity in perceived and actual social capital and the effects of conversations across first degree social graphs and across the social graphs of those connected across each degree (friend of friends and so on).

To help, I drafted a working definition to address influence and influencers as slightly modified from its longstanding definition in standard dictionaries.

Influence is the ability to cause desirable and measurable actions and outcomes.

As everyday people flirt with reach and impact, the question becomes, do they hold the same potential to cause effects similar to those of traditional influence and connectedness, for example celebrities, industry or political leaders, media properties and favorite brands?

The calls for change have been happening for years; businesses that don’t move into the same venues where their customers spend the most time stand to lose out when it comes to opportunities to engage with and do business with them. Most businesses have heard all of this before: change now or fall behind.

The Social Business Economy - Infographic

The Social Business Economy - Infographic | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it
Is it about having your brand on Twitter or Facebook? Is it about private social networks?

Certainly, these all play a part. But what social business is truly about a “shift”, a move from enterprises attempting insulate itself from disruption and instead greeting it warmly.

To pull this off, organizations need to establish a more transparent environment, both externally and internally. A social business allows organizations to better solicit and understand customer feedback, to react in real-time to industry changes and not be caught flat footed. Internally, it allows communication to go from a top-down model to a back-and-forth, up-down strategy. (We’ve called this the “bathroom moment” in the past.)

Dick Cheuk's curator insight, December 14, 2012 1:00 AM

I just finished the TED book "Why School?" by Will Richardson which shows similar view with this article.  I think the problem we are facing is the disconnection between business wourld (talents consumers), schools (talents providers), parents (talents providers - kids spend more time with their parents than in school) and students (talents themselves).

Even with the rapid changing environment, business thinks they still need skills same as ten years ago which shape what schools should teach.  Our schools follow this path and ensure that no matter what kinds of kids they have, they all become the same when they come out of schools.  Parents are forced to play this game because they want their kids to success (the word success is mainly defined by the business world).  The kids… when do they have a choice? And who has asked what they want to learn?

There are a lot we need to do to radically transform our education system.  We need to rethink what is the purpose of education, whose interest is more important, the business world or the kids?  Sir Ken Robinson’s TED talks provide some insights.
