This post is a brief guide to co-leading. I’ll outline why having co-leaders is hard, why it’s a source of enhanced productivity, creativity, and joy when it works, and some tactics for success. 

I’m going to use the term co-leading throughout. I’m focused primarily on co-CEO relationships, but I think what I write applies equally to co-founders and other collaborative executive structures.

I’m writing primarily from my experience co-founding and subsequently co-CEO’ing HowAboutWe with Brian Schechter, my best friend since childhood. Over about five years, we grew the company to 100 people, and then — this past summer — sold it to IAC. We’re still best friends.

(From the article): Know your own weaknesses. If you are incapable of seeing your weaknesses — and particularly the things you do that are hard for your co-leaders, even if they aren’t categorically counterproductive — then you will end up in a prideful, defensive, unhelpful stance. If you see your weaknesses then you will be able to build a balanced view of the relationship dynamics that will support rapid de-escalation and effective collaboration. Your vulnerability will be fuel. Any time you spend being defensive is time wasted.

This has been a revelatory and repetitive experience for me over the past twelve months. Last October I made a conscious decision to blog publicly and be more active on social platforms like Twitter. Some of the connections made online since then, and amplified through face-to-face time spent over coffee or food, have resulted in strong friendships that are both cherished and highly valued. In people like Anne Marie McEwan and Jon Husband, for example, I have found individuals who influence and challenge my thinking, and with whom I interact several times a week. With Kenneth Mikkelsen, I have formed a friendship and a writing partnership, shaped by a relationship with someone with whom I have a number of overlapping and interacting interests. The list goes on and on. People like Julian Stodd, Doug Shaw, John Wenger, Anne McCrossan and Luis Suarez have given me the courage to take the next step and try the freelance life again. To put my convictions into practice.

G. Lafley stated that most innovation failures are actually social. They lie in breakdowns of communication. They sit wedged in silos, separating the expertise of one functional area from another. These social failures impact not only the roots of innovation within an organization, but its execution as well.

Recent research by Cornerstone On Demand shows 38 percent of workers feel there is not enough collaboration in the workplace. Factors that would encourage collaboration, according to participants of the study, include positive recognition of input shared (50 percent), encouragement from senior staff (41 percent), ability to easily share input with different departments (33 percent), and more.

This concept and the visual was taken from my new book which came out today called, The Future of Work: Attract New Talent, Build Better Leaders, and Create a Competitive Organization.

 

One of the things I have been writing about and have tried to make clear over the past few months is that work as we know it is dead and that the only way forward is to challenge convention around how we work, how we lead, and how we build our companies. Employees which were once thought of expendable cogs are the most valuable asset that any organization has. However, the employee from a decade ago isn’t the same as the employee who we are starting to see today. To help show that I wanted to share an image from my upcoming book which depicts how employees are evolving. It’s an easy way to see the past vs the future.

Nice graphic that captures the essence of how work and the employee is changing / needing to change. It is very close to an exercise we did with our team as we prepared for our move and our "workplace" consultants (Avance') had our entire team map how work was, how it is now, and where they see it going... Here are some of the key areas:

 

From individual work to group work

From hierarchy to flat structure

From Independent group to interdependent group

From internally focused to external (customer/member and brand)

From planned connections to spontaneous connections

From single work point to multiple workpoints

From structured to fluid

 

This also reinforces our approach to what we are calling the "shift change" and how the interplay of technology, workplace, leadership, learning, and culture are all in need of intentional thoughtful planning to get the most out of the new world we are facing...
