David Hain's insight:

So true - and it could be even more powerful in the Public Sector!  But good collaboration needs careful due diligence - sometimes the cost of getting it wrong is greater than not starting...

According to a new study in Advances in Strategic Management from Jason Davis at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, companies can synchronize their product development work in three ways:

1. By deliberately collaborating with partners;
2. By reacting to signals from other companies; and
3. By combining these two strategies into a hybrid approach.

Ashoka's collaboration with the Peace Corps goes way back to when  Sargent Shriver, the dynamic force behind the creation of the Peace Corps, provided thought leadership for the creation of Ashoka as a member of the Ashoka Council. Since then, based on the mutual values of service, leadership and community engagement, Ashoka fellows and Peace Corps volunteers have worked and learnt from each other.

As both organisations approach milestones in their journeys, Ashoka asks volunteers to help strengthen the bond. Read Peace Corps volunteer and Ashoka Fellow,Greg Van Kirk's experience here.

50+ Tools for Web Based Collaboration | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it

The following is a highlight of a competitive analysis the author did earlier this year when he was involved in designing software that would allow remote research teams to work together. While software is still a long way from replacing all in-person collaboration it’s becoming easier for remote or mobile workers to stay productive and communicative with their team. Certainly the tools we have available today are a vast improvement over what he used when Ihefirst tried telecommuting 12 years ago!

Eight Dangers of Collaboration

Eight Dangers of Collaboration | Collaborationweb | Scoop.it
Most of what is written about collaboration is positive. Even hip. Collaboration is championed enthusiastically by the Enterprise 2.0 experts, as well as leading thinkers like Don Tapscott, as the crucial approach for the 21st century.

David Hain's insight:

Sound sense.  It's often portrayed as "four legs good, 2 legs bad". But the cost of poorly thought out collaboration is high and only breeds cynicsm against the best reasons for applying collaborative methods.  Also, collaboration takes more than one form and the method should be chosn carefully for the problem and context.
