The Brain Trainers|New York Times | Cognitive Enhancement Technologies | Scoop.it

"Unlike traditional tutoring services that seek to help students master a subject, brain training purports to enhance comprehension and the ability to analyze and mentally manipulate concepts, images, sounds and instructions. In a word, it seeks to make students smarter...Those results are achieved, the companies say, by repurposing cognitive tasks initially developed by psychologists as tests of mental abilities. With technical names like the antisaccade, the N-back and the complex working memory span task, the exercises are dressed up as games that become increasingly difficult as students gain mastery."

Trend: Mobile apps to improve vision via perceptual learning | SharpBrains

Trend: Mobile apps to improve vision via perceptual learning | SharpBrains | Cognitive Enhancement Technologies | Scoop.it
“ Vision training: Mobile app improved pilots’ vision (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association): “Military pilots (and other test subjects) have improved their vision after a few weeks of training with a new application for mobile devices—an application now available to the public. The technology has helped dedicated users reverse age-related vision loss, and to help younger people improve on 20/20. Their eyes—including lenses, muscles, and receptors that send signals to the optic nerve—are only incidentally involved: The real work is going on inside the brain… More specifically, the GlassesOff application is designed to facilitate “perceptual learning,” which refers to the brain’s ability to improve perception (visual, in this case) through training. Unlike corrective lenses or laser surgery, which improve the quality of the image captured by the eye, GlassesOff improves vision without any change to the eye itself. The results are achieved by enhancing the brain’s visual processing speed and accuracy through various exercises requiring users to interpret images on the screen in sessions that last 12 to 15 minutes, three times a week. Over a period of a few weeks, the brain adapts to more efficiently process images, even if they are flawed by lenses that have lost focus.””

"BrainBaseline is the first iPad application for measuring how well your brain works. BrainBaseline crosses the ease of use and the multi-touch technology of the iPad with a series of interactive and engaging game-based assessments. These activities use the same laboratory analyses neuroscientists use to measure memory, attention, and processing speed, providing users with the ability to test their cognitive functioning at home, at the office, or wherever you and your iPad go! Tests like the intelligence quotient (IQ) test can only tell you what your brain is capable of doing. BrainBaseline can tell you what your brain is doing and help you track progress and improvements in your cognitive functions over time. "

Brain-controlled: the user interface of the future | Digital Trends

Brain-controlled: the user interface of the future | Digital Trends | Cognitive Enhancement Technologies | Scoop.it

"Brain-computer interfaces are quickly becoming more advanced and accessible, and some of the ways they're being used are truly mind-boggling.

Why toil with the pressing of buttons or tilting of joysticks when controlling something can be as simple as thinking about it? This kind of technology may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but in reality, it’s actually been around for decades. The development of electroencephalography (EEG) technology can be traced back to the 1920′s, but it wasn’t until recently that we figured out a way to use neurofeedback to control electronic devices. Nowadays, we can use brain-computer interfaces (BCI’s) to control everything from prosthetic limbs, to robotic arms, cars, and even things as simple as your computer’s cursor."

Your new digital therapist..."t's 2018, and you're not feeling your best. Yesterday, on the phone with Comcast, you forgot your social security number, and had to call your mom to get it. And the fatigue -- last Thursday, you slept clear through your alarm, until Agnes in 8J pounded on your ceiling with a basketball. You've been here before; you know you're depressed. And you know what you have to do."
