Strange tales: Condé, Cognac and Bourbon lilies

Strange tales: Condé, Cognac and Bourbon lilies | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it

A decorated flask found in a Cognac field was the inspiration for one of spirits' leading brands, Louis XIII

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:
The Land of Cognac has long been marked by the Catholic and Protestant religions.
Many places, often melted in the landscape, bear the mark.

The world of cognac and its organization still live with the consequences of the religious confrontation, whose origin comes from the Renaissance.

Do you doubt it? Explore the vineyard on the trail of this history. Perhaps you will discover a part of it at the bottom of your glass ...

The Guide to Finding Great Cognac

The Guide to Finding Great Cognac | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it
Cognac is a brandy made from the white wine grapes grown in the Cognac region of France. Learn how to find great Cognac by understanding the region, the aging classifications, the major brands, and…
Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:
There are several ways to find a great cognac.

One is to have next door a wine shop or a bar specializing in spirits.

The very best one way is touring the vineyard of Cognac, South-West of France..

Next to the major brands there are 200 craft producers willing to let you discover their estate with its traditional distillery.

There you meet the owner and, with him or her, you taste family's products that have been aging for decades.

Amazing experience for cognac aficionados !

You don't know how to magae your tour : ask for a guide !

Why You Should be Drinking Cognac

Why You Should be Drinking Cognac | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it
America now consumes more cognac than any other country in the world. Here's why.
Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:
Northern America is now the most consuming world area in the world. This is partly explained by the US$ / € parity, partly by a real development of this category, both with young cognac (VS, 3*...) and much older (XO and over) and partly by the drop of consumption in China. Next could be the recovery of Russia once their economic turmoil is over. The worse for the Cognac country is not yet for tomorrow ...

Brandy Marquis de Villard - French Brandy

Brandy Marquis de Villard - French Brandy | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it
Our French brandy, MARQUIS DE VILLARD, has been produced since 1950 following closely the great French traditional methods.

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

All cognacs are a brandy, or a spirit made from wine. But not all brandies are a Cognac... Even though some look very similar.

This Marquis de Villard brandy looks like a cognac but it is not. And who, better than a cognac trading house, could guarantee this ?

Could we say it is a cousin ? We leave it to you to decide ...

A quick tour at Chateau fontpinot, the house of Cognac Frapin

A quick tour at Chateau fontpinot, the house of Cognac Frapin | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it

Cognac : the very word embodies sophistication and class.  This ancient drink should not be confused with brandies from Spain, Cyprus or other countries  ...

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

Frapin has a specific position in the Cognac world. Like few trading houses it is known almost worldwide but it is not a trading house !

Like a number of family estates, Frapin distils wines coming only from their own vineyards and market only them but they are known worldwide like no other family estate !

If to this specific position you add the quality of their cognacs coming from the best growth area, the Grande Champagne vineyards, then you understand why visiting this estate is quite an experience ...

Annually, in the National Agricultural Fair, is held the Concours Général Agricole (CGA) The Competition Products aims to reward the best wines and the best French products, including the wines from Charentes, the Cognac country.

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

Not yet very known, these wines from the Charentes are drinking wines, not wines to be distilled.

Their quality improved significantly and they are now considered by amateurs.

A sign which does not mislead : Rémy Martin owners have invested in a wine estate just next to their Louis XIII storages

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

1270 is the year when Frapin family located in the Charente vineyards.

This family succeeded to combine the commercial techniques of the major trading houses and the know-how to traditional winemakers-distillers to offer today cognacs only from its own vineyards.

Only this is worth making the trip to Segonzac

Visiting a Cognac Trading House

Visiting a Cognac Trading House | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it

Perhaps I should start by defining what a trading house generally means. These companies in the main buy in distilled grape juice (Eau de Vie) and then age, blend and market the final product ...

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

Here is a very nice presentation of the work of a trading house in the Cognac country
Very nice because:
- Cognac Delamain works in the spirit and form of the traders of former times
- The explanation given by Mark, the visitor of the day, is both a fair and good summary
- Photos of Mark, professional photographer, are splendid.

This article on the visit I made with Mark makes it perfectly the atmosphere of the discrete world of the cognac.

Cognac drinkers to ditch ‘big four’ for independent brands

Cognac drinkers to ditch ‘big four’ for independent brands | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it
Cognac drinkers are predicted to switch loyalty from the “big four” brands to discover smaller producers, much like what has happened in the whisky and beer market.

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

At the moment, it is still hard to find shops which propose a wide range of cognacs including small producers.
Happily, more and more small cognac estates have now their own online shop and can deliver to a number of countries.

The point is how to find these producers ?
The best idea is to tour the vineyards of Cognac :
- A good way to be away from the beaten track, meeting producers and
- A good opportunity to taste their cognacs and select those one prefers

The best option is to immerse yourself in the country of "slow travel" where everyone gives time to time, discovering the way of living in the vineyards, visiting a traditional cooperage, following the fabulous process from the vine to the glass ...

In Las Vegas, a timeless cocktail blended with the great History of the world

In Las Vegas, a timeless cocktail blended with the great History of the world | The Cognac and its vineyards | Scoop.it

Vegas loves to test your limits. If you think a $15 to $20 cocktail is overpriced, think again. There are some decadent drinks in Sin City that can literally empty your bank account.

1914 Sidecar is one of them.

Why 1914 ? Because of the cognac to prepare the cocktail...

Jean-Luc Montembault's insight:

The history of this cognac is blended with the great History of the world...

This cognac is from 1914, the first year of World War I. As the story goes, the men of Segonzac, the capital city of the Grande Champagne Cognac in France, had been called upon to fight on the Western Front.

After their departure, the women who remained behind distilled a small batch of the region’s famous tipple – the Ferrand Cognac Memoire 1914.

Today enjoy some time with a timeless cocktail...

Instead of Las Vegas, you may also come to Segonzac and trace the history of the world in search of exceptionally old cognacs.
