Giffords gun control group wants $20 million for 2014 elections

Giffords gun control group wants $20 million for 2014 elections | Coffee Party News | Scoop.it

by David Ingram and Tim Gayno, Reuters

A new gun control group led by Gabrielle Giffords, the former U.S. congresswoman wounded in a Tucson shooting rampage, wants to raise $20 million for the 2014 congressional elections, matching the National Rifle Association's spending in last November's elections, the group's treasurer said on Wednesday.

Giffords and her husband, former U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly, have turned to Houston trial lawyer and Democratic donor Steve Mostyn to act as treasurer. He gave $1 million of his own money to help kick start a campaign launched on Tuesday calling for what Giffords and Kelly describe as common-sense measures to curb gun violence.

The move marks the entry of the high-profile couple, both gun owners, into a heated national debate over gun control fueled by the massacre of 20 children and six teachers at a Connecticut elementary school last month. [MORE]

Activists clash outside NRA's 1st press conference since Newtown Massacre

Activists clashed in front of NRA's first press conference after the Sandy Hook massacre. A video in a new web documentary series, Story of America: A Nation...
Coffee Party USA's insight:

Virginia resident and political consultant Larry Ward, interrupted protesters who gathered on Friday, Dec 21, 2012 to deliver a petition with 200,000 signatures to the NRA. During the NRA's first press conference since the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting tragedy, Larry argued that teachers should be armed with guns. The same argument was made by the NRA during the press conference.

In this video, Ward is seen being shouted down by the protesters, but he is able to have a civil discussion moments later with filmmaker Annabel Park, who was filming for her latest project, Story of America. Earlier this week, Park published a blog post in reply to pro-gun talking points, which has since gone viral (50K likes in first 4 days).

This is the first video in a new Story of America video series about gun control.  Donate to Story of America's crowdfunding campaign.

Gavin Baker's curator insight, February 5, 2013 12:52 PM

This video is showing you the different opinions that people have on keeping a weapon in the school for protection.  The teachers don't feel comfortable with keeping a weapon so close to the young children, but at the same time, a gun in the class room could potentially save many lives if you are given a chance to act.

I agree i would not want to have guns in the school. What if a kid got a hold of it than did another repeat. That would not be good.

Good point Brandon, and what about a class full of kids running for the door, can someone guarantee no bystanders won't be hit? At what consequence to the person firing?
