Obama's Dubious Legacy: Intimidation of Whistle-Blowers using the Espionage Act? | Nomadic Politics

Obama's Dubious Legacy: Intimidation of Whistle-Blowers using the Espionage Act? | Nomadic Politics | Coffee Party News | Scoop.it
Despite campaign promises of a more open government, of change and more citizen participation in government, the Obama administration has instead pursued a policy of silencing whistle-blowers. Will this be Obama's legacy?
Coffee Party USA's insight:

This may be the single, dangerous legacy so far that units both Bush and Obama and the most lasting if society doesn't demand correction and our congress fails to respond to that demand.

Watch the reports of this type of legalized oppression. Prior to Snowden there was this event:

“I did this because I believe people have the right to know what government and corporations are doing behind closed doors. I did what I believe is right,” he wrote in his statement. ( http://rt.com/usa/jeremy-hammond-sentence-nyc-785/

Here we go again. Why Monica? Why isn't it OK to condemn the actions of President Obama without trying to compare and contrast/tying him to President Bush or another Republican? We are to here to apologize for his actions. We are not here to prop up the Democrats. Nor are we here to whitewash this President’s litany of failures by saying he is no worse than the ultimate failure (his predecessor). We are here to tell the truth and to stop the abuse of power by people who claim to have our backs but don’t. The facts, Monica (and Coffee Party is about facts), bear out that President Obama has been a huge disappointment; making literally dozens of important promises that he has completely failed to deliver on. Closing Gitmo. Getting us out of two wars in the Middle East. Crating a clean energy economy with job growth. Importing drugs from Canada with FDA oversight. And his biggest whopper of them all, "Transparency and the Rule of Law will be the touchstones of this administration". Why do you think Snowden is such an important story? But wait, there’s more. Besides those broken promises, he has caved to every Big Business demand that has been pushed through our bought congress. The Monsanto Rider. The indefinite detention clause of the NDAA. Sequestration. Government Shutdown. Student load rates doubling. Paying bonuses to AIG big wigs after they crashed the economy and stole 90% of the wealth from the bottom 80% of The People (it was in their homes). And failing to hold anyone on Wall Street criminally accountable. All without a single veto. That being said Monica, if you still insist in tying the current President to the past one then know this: Anything that the two of them have done "in common" so far will pale in comparison to the passing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Started under Bush in 2005, continued under Obama for the past five years, and written by 600 corporate consultants, this so-called Free Trade Agreement represents the final nail in the coffin of the middle class recovery and many of our personal freedoms. If he doesn’t find the courage of his convictions, President Obama’s legacy will be very simple to write: “All talk -- no action”.
Monica S Mcfeeters's comment, December 18, 2013 3:47 PM
Well I may get back to you more on this later....It's a busy day today. What I can say for now is "Ditto". "It's what you say". I was just trying to focus on one point ...Thought I might do an overkill and overwhelm folks addressing the whole ball of wax at once....but I think you almost cover it all. I totally agree. The TPP as far as I know will be owned by Obama and I agree with your take on that. Obama WILL own that. I do think we should hold our congress accountable as well because they are designed to hold the power for the people and not give it away to presidents or corporations.

This whistle blower issue is tied to both leaders and congress as well. This crackdown on whistleblowers seems to sadly get a bipartisan and corporate nod of encouragement. The article states the idea that if Obama is for transparency he needs to find the backbone to stand up again for that and the political skill to make it happen. So far he has out done all other presidents on oppressing those that whistle blow and media outlets that allow whistle blowing to occur. The linked film supports that as well. Many of the things we are concerned about could not have been confirmed without these whistle blowers. That is why it is good to let this article shine the light on the treatment of these people. The focus this article gives to that issue is well deserved. I could add more examples as well but the ones provided state the case.

Bush opened this and others not so great doors with the Patriot Act Obama has so far not done a thing to close it and has taken war on whistle blowers to new heights from all the evidence. Imagine what the next president and NSA will do if we don’t turn this around with public concern and out cry. The right side is also quick to condemn Obama when he doesn't do act fast enough to oppress. The whole trade treaty idea needs to be mostly removed from the fast track and returned to the people for open debate and to the congress for oversight. We got a bad deal on the one Bush Senior started and Clinton sealed the deal on and this one looks worse…far worse. The idea that it involves all stake holders is a joke. It involves some rulers and a bunch of corporate rulers/owners and that is for sure NOT democracy.
Well said Monica. I'm glad we are on the same page here. The fact is that anything one President starts but fails to finish becomes the property of the next resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Once the new regime decides to move forward with, change, or kill the old regimes idea in mid-flight, then they own it. Most egregious for me (so far) were the bonuses paid to the AIG scumbags who only deserved a 10x10 cement room with bars. In fact, just this week, U.S. District Court Judge Jed S. Rakoff wrote a scathing indictment of the federal government’s approach to prosecuting Wall Street finance and banking executives, concluding that timidity, lack of resources, and a desire by individual prosecutors to pluck the low hanging fruit of fraud cases has left the country’s top financial wheeler-dealers unscathed by the likely crimes that seized up the world economy. Still other judges are openly criticizing the secretive nature of the Obama Administration. District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle, a Clinton appointee, blasted the administration for trying keep secret a memo on foreign aid, writing: “The government appears to adopt the cavalier attitude that the President should be permitted to convey orders throughout the Executive Branch without public oversight...to engage in what is in effect governance by ‘secret law.’” If the President doesn't grow a pair, his legacy, other than the ACA (and although it has promise we can't fully judge its results yet) will be one of abject failure. As someone who voted for "Hope and Change", I cannot tell you how thoroughly disappointing I am -- and I know I am not alone.
