Coffee Party Feminists & Lunch with Louden are both parts of the BE THE MEDIA Project by Coffee Party USA | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

The Coffee Party USA membership believes that money-in-politics is the keystone issue in this republic's democracy today. WOMEN are now targets for special interests that use the influence of their political contributions to impose their religious, economic, and political will. Coffee Party Feminists is a part of the BE THE MEDIA project. It is intended to share evidence of special interest targeting and to report on actions being taken across America to defend and restore women's rights.

When you JOIN the Coffee Party or RENEW your membership, you become one of the grass roots funders of our BE THE MEDIA Project.

"Lack of access to education, medical care, good wages, and healthy food isn’t just leaving the worst-off Americans behind. It’s killing them."

Shareholder Religion v Employee Religion: Lunch with Louden 3/26/14

Shareholder Religion v Employee Religion: Lunch with Louden 3/26/14 | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

Tuesday's arguments in the Sebelius v Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. Supreme Court case divided the justices, as the women of the court appeared split from the men over whether for-profit companies have religious freedom protections that would exempt them from providing their workers with insurance coverage for contraception.

The buzz is on over drive, pointing to this, that, or the other rational for any given favorite outcome. Jeanene posted on JOIN THE COFFEE PARTY MOVEMENT Facebook page Wednesday, and was shocked by many of the comments.

Thursday, March 27th
12:00 Noon Pacific/3pm Eastern
Stream live or later at http://tobtr.com/s/6119517
or call in live to 646-929-2495

What is your understanding of the merits of the case? How did you read the court's behavior. Is there an underlying fundamental question being asked? Do you think the religious values of shareholders should trump the religious values of employees?

Oregon's Ron Wyden had this to say: "It's unacceptable and inappropriate for bosses at for-profit corporations to pick and choose which laws to follow. So far, 360,000 Oregon women have benefited from expanded access to preventive services, including contraceptives. Women's health choices should be made between them and their doctors – not their bosses."

Have a cup of coffee and talk about this with host Jeanene Louden and special co-host Anne Furstenau Walker. View many related articles on LUNCH WITH LOUDEN Facebook page.

Taking corporate personhood too far?

Taking corporate personhood too far? | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

by JEANENE LOUDEN, Join the Coffee Party Movement

Image thanks to Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images.

Another reason to rein in the notion that corporations are people: the Supreme Court case argument that for-profit businesses have the same rights as people to exercise religious beliefs. Isn't this taking corporate personhood too far? ~Jeanene

"If Hobby Lobby and Conestoga prevail, it would prompt 'a fundamental shift in the understanding of the First Amendment'," according to David Gans, the civil rights director for the Constitutional Accountability Center.

http://www.wtsp.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/03/26/hobby-lobby-supreme-court/6902429/

Justice Kegan: "So another employer comes in and that employer says, I have a religious objection to sex discrimination laws; and then another employer comes in, I have a religious objection to minimum wage laws; and then another, family leave; and then another, child labor laws. And all of that is subject to the exact same test which you say is this unbelievably high test, the compelling interest standard with the least restrictive alternative."

Kagan's remarks might sound familiar to the legally-trained ear. In a 1990 majority opinion in Employment Division v. Smith, Scalia alluded to the same examples of what might happen if religious entities are permitted to claim exemptions from generally applicable laws. He warned that "[a]ny society adopting such a system would be courting anarchy."

Join Us at the Supreme Court

Join Us at the Supreme Court | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

On March 25 the Supreme Court will hear two cases brought by for-profit companies that want to deny their employees coverage for birth control. The bosses at Hobby Lobby, a large chain of arts and craft stores, and Conestoga Wood Specialties, which manufactures cabinets, are arguing that their personal religious beliefs should trump the personal beliefs of their female employees, allowing them to evade the law and deny their employees birth control coverage.

This Is Personal will be at the Supreme Court on the day of the hearings to rally in support of birth control coverage and to show America that every woman should have access to this benefit, regardless of her boss’s religious beliefs.

Already more than 27 million women have access to the birth control coverage benefit under the new health care law. Birth control, one of the most frequently used women’s preventive health services, is critical to women’s health and equality. Excluding it from insurance coverage for women while covering the full range of preventive care for men is discrimination—pure and simple.

If you agree — show it. You may not be able to be there in person, but you can still keep it personal. Add your name to the big banner.

Thanks for keeping it personal,

Thao Nguyen
Campaign Director

Hoarding Cash v Spreading the Wealth: Lunch w Louden 3/13/14

Hoarding Cash v Spreading the Wealth: Lunch w Louden 3/13/14 | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it
Hoarding the Cash or Spreading the Wealth?

Monday on Join the Coffee Party Movement's Facebook page, we posted the following quote from the play (and movie) Hello Dolly on Join the Coffee Party Movement. "Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It's not worth a thing unless it's spread around, encouraging young things to grow."

We asked the simple question, “how would YOU spread money/manure around?” While our post never said ANYTHING about taxes or giving money to the government, most of the 300+ comments on the Facebook post assumed that is what we meant.

So let's try this again: If YOU had the money to spread around and encourage young things to grow, what would you nurture? How would you use the money? Or would you hoard it?

Join us on Lunch with Louden and share your ideas of “encouraging young things to grow.” LUNCH w LOUDEN Jeanene Louden and co-host Debilyn Molineaux talk about current events and look for opportunities to bridge political divides, expose corruption and share information not covered in mainstream media.
