House Passes Ryan Budget with Cuts to Social Programs

House Passes Ryan Budget with Cuts to Social Programs | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

Feminist Daily News

The House on Thursday passed a plan to increase military spending while slashing funding for food and child care programs, as well as Medicaid and federal employees' benefits. The budget proposal, written by House Budget Committee chairman Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI1), was an attempt to avoid the cuts to defense spending mandated in last summer's budget deal. The plan passed with the minimum 218 votes, with 16 Republicans and all Democrats voting no.

No, You Cannot Substitute ‘Sex’ For ‘Rape’

No, You Cannot Substitute ‘Sex’ For ‘Rape’ | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

by TARA CULP-RESSLER

(Credit: Change.org)

On Friday afternoon, the Associated Press ran a story about a young woman in Washington state who alleges that her high school’s officials failed to protect her from a 16-year-old boy who raped her on school property, and even allowed the boy to remain in the same classroom with her after her guardian reported she was being harassed by him. The school continues to deny most of her claims, and she is seeking at least $400,000 in damages.

In its headline about the story, the AP chose to characterize the encounter — which took place in a bathroom at the high school — as “restroom sex”:

Shame on you, AP.

Marilee Ritchie Hird's curator insight, May 14, 9:54 AM

The substitution implies "consentual". The AP should be ashamed.

Thanks to Lorraine Schneider for her artistic reaction to the Vietnam War

Political activism seems a world removed from the hearts-and-flowers sentiments of Mother’s Day. But if 19th century poet and feminist Julia Ward Howe had had her way, the mothers of the world would not be spending the second Sunday in May being pampered and feted, but rather joining with other mothers in a global call for peace.

Nevada School District Agrees to Address Lack of Athletic Opportunities for Girls

Nevada School District Agrees to Address Lack of Athletic Opportunities for Girls | Coffee Party Feminists | Scoop.it

by JESSICA MASON PIEKLO, Senior Legal Analyst, RH Reality Check

Nevada's largest public school district has resolved a civil rights complaint that it was discriminating against girls by failing to provide equal opportunities in athletics. (Young female basketball player via Shutterstock)

In 2010 Clark County, Nevada, the largest public school district in the state, faced allegations that it was failing to provide the educational opportunities required by law for girls enrolled in its high schools. Now, thanks to an investigation by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), that should change.

The Clark County School District is among 12 public school districts across the country, including Chicago Public Schools and Houston Public Schools, to have a double-digit disparity between the percentage of girls who are students and girls who participate in sports. According to a 2010 complaint filed with the OCR by the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), that disparity means girls in the state are not receiving equal opportunities to play sports, in violation of Title IX, which prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded schools.
