Anderson Cooper: “I’m gay”

Anderson Cooper: “I’m gay” | Coffee Party Equality | Scoop.it

Finally! The CNN anchor tells Andrew Sullivan that by remaining silent, he looked like he was hiding something

by WILLA PASKIN, Salon

Anderson Cooper, who has long been rumored to be gay — or whatever the word is for something that is past rumor, but not quite confirmed as fact — just came out this morning in a lovely, eloquent email to Andrew Sullivan.

Sullivan, who has been friends with Cooper for two decades, has asked Cooper’s opinion on a recent Entertainment Weekly cover story about “The New Art of Coming Out,” a trend piece on the growing number of casually, calmly, openly gay people in the entertainment business who came out of the closet with minimal fuss. (Think of Jim Parsons, who just came out in a throwaway sentence in a New York Times profile, or Zachary Quinto who did it in an interview, as well as Neil Patrick Harris, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jane Lynch and more.) Jon Stewart Takes On ‘Incredibly Disheartening’ Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day

Jon Stewart Takes On ‘Incredibly Disheartening’ Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day | Coffee Party Equality | Scoop.it

Last night, Jon Stewart dedicated the entire opening of The Daily Show to the Chick-fil-A controversy.  He ended the segment by concluding that the end result might be a win-win:

STEWART: For people who are gay or support gay marriage, I get how seeing thousands of people come out to make this statement is incredibly disheartening, but take solace in this: Gay marriage is happening. Like many drive-through window lanes, it ain’t going backwards. And your bonus is this: You get gay marriage, and all your political opponents are going to get is Type 2 Diabetes. Here’s my prediction: In ten years, America will have a lot more gay marriage and a lot more Chick-fil-A restaurants because they are both quality products.  [MORE]

New York's Gay Marriage Challenge Rejected by Appeals Court

New York's Gay Marriage Challenge Rejected by Appeals Court | Coffee Party Equality | Scoop.it

by Katherine T. Phan , Christian Post Reporter

A state appeals court rejected a lawsuit challenging New York's gay marriage law Friday, ruling that Republican state senators did not violate the state's open meeting law when they held closed-door meetings with gay marriage supporters, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court in Rochester voted 5-0 to reject the challenge brought by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms. The case questioned the legality of the process and procedure by which same-sex marriage became law in New York and sought to invalidate gay marriages performed in the state.

New York's open meeting law requires that legislative deliberations be open to the public. [MORE]

How dare Rabbi Amar call Conservative and Reform Jews corrupt?

How dare Rabbi Amar call Conservative and Reform Jews corrupt? | Coffee Party Equality | Scoop.it

"Women are not a threat to me, to fellow men, or to my society. I accept that some people prefer to accentuate gender differences. Yet I also accept that some do not, and I welcome women to engage in the same commandments as men, including leading services, wearing tallit and tefillin, and becoming rabbis. I certainly believe that women belong in the public sphere.

"I take the Torah’s statement that “it is not good for a human to be alone” seriously, and I believe that it applies to all people, regardless of their sexuality. I understand that the Torah places restrictions on sexual acts for all people, and I believe that this is meant to emphasize holiness in intimate relations, not to forbid some people from having them at all."
