As one who has long and passionately cared about the environment, I find it especially dismaying that some of the loudest voices in the party today think that energy independence means nothing more than drilling for more oil and gas, that the Environmental Protection Agency’s primary effect on society is hampering business growth, and that renewable resources are high on the list of President Obama’s mistakes.
Let’s not let conservation become a Democratic issue. It was first raised by Republican President Theodore Roosevelt. It was under the administration of Republican President Richard Nixon that Environmental Protection Agency became a reality. As scandal turned the public against Nixon, the EPA and its first administrator remained popular.
