Gameday: Five storylines - OU vs. West Virginia

Gameday: Five storylines - OU vs. West Virginia | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary:  It is gameday!  Sooner4OU predicts the Sooner win 42-28 in Morgantown.  What is your prediction?  Boomer!

Article Excerpt: The Sooners travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers on Saturday. Here are five storylines to keep an eye on:

1. How will the Sooners react to their first trip to Morgantown, W. Va.?

No player in the program has played at West Virginia. Milan Puskar Stadium is generally an unpleasant place to play for opponents but the Mountaineers have lost to Kansas State and TCU in their last two home games.

The road atmosphere isn’t likely to be as rowdy as expected when the season began and this was considered one of the Big 12’s marquee games of 2012.

All Hands On Deck For OU Secondary vs. WVU

All Hands On Deck For OU Secondary vs. WVU | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: The Sooner secondary, especiallyTony jefferson have been playing at a really high-level.  The only caveat to that is the 3rd down conversions that the whole defense has been giving up must improve from the last couple of performances.  If they can improve in that area they should provide a serious challenge to the pinball machine offense at West Virginia.  Personally, I think the Sooner defense is up to the challenge and the Sooner offense will take advantage of the horrible WVU defense and put OU in a position to win by 10 or more.  What do you think?

Article Excerpt: In a matter of weeks, Oklahoma's secondary has gone from question mark to unquestioned strength in one of the nation's top defenses.

Before the season began, it was easy for Sooners fans to look at Oklahoma's game against West Virginiawith trepidation.

The Mountaineers' offense is triggered by quarterback Geno Smith and features a bevy of talented pass-catchers. WVU was a potential nightmare for a Sooners defense with several question marks in the secondary.

Nine games later, the Sooners' secondary is the foundation of the nation's No. 8 pass defense.

"Our guys have played well and competed," said defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, who also coaches OU's secondary.

WVU Perspective: Sooners Defense Out To Dominate

WVU Perspective: Sooners Defense Out To Dominate  | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: The Sooners are number 20 in total defense in the NCAA and I hope this article is right and OU's defense brings it on Saturday night and becomes part of the highlight reel for a big Sooner victory.  Boomer!

Article Excerpt: A year ago, Oklahoma finished No. 55 in total defense and No. 31 in scoring defense.

The Sooners went 10-3 and the defensive numbers weren't embarrassing for a product of the Big 12 Conference.

Yet the Sooners lost three conference games and gave up 41, 44 and 45 points. Oklahoma had only given up 40 points or more four times after allowing 48 to West Virginia in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl.

"Last year, we were much better than the way we played, but there were just a lot of mental errors," Sooners senior cornerback Demontre Hurst said. "It all comes down to getting together as a team and focusing on an attitude before the game, because we don't want to play like we did last year."

Attitude is an interesting word because even with the recruiting classes and the big bodies and athletic players across the field, opponents marvel at the assertiveness with which the Sooners play.
