R.I.P. Former Sooners Coach Chuck Fairbanks Passes At Age 79

R.I.P. Former Sooners Coach Chuck Fairbanks Passes At Age 79 | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Former Oklahoma head coach Chuck Fairbanks (on the right in the image) passed away today after year long battle with brain cancer at age 79, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Coach Fairbanks coached Oklahoma from 1967 through 1972.  He had a record of 52-15-1 at OU, before then OU offensive coordinator Barry Switzer replaced him after Fairbanks opted to become head coach of the New England Patriots in the NFL.

While Coach Fairbanks is rarely ever considered as great of a Sooner coach as Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer or Bob Stoops, he was still a good coach who helped move the Sooners from the wishbone offense from the veer offensive schemme that lead to the Sooners largely dominating college football during the 70 and 80s.

Coach Fairbanks will be missed by the entire Sooner Nation.

OU's Maple Wins Wrestling National Championship, First in Eight Years For Sooners

OU's Maple Wins Wrestling National Championship, First in Eight Years For Sooners | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: The Sooners collected their first individual national champion in wrestling in eight years, thanks to the strong efforts of Kendric Maple. HThe two-time All American won it in a 4-3 decision Edinboro's Mitchell Port.  This type of success could begin to push the success of the program going forward.

OU Linebackers Back On The Move In The Sooner "D"

OU Linebackers Back On The Move In The Sooner "D" | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: Corey Nelson was at one point a couple of years ago the golden child for Bob Stoops.  He took numerous opportunities to speak to Corey's amazing skills and abilities and then next thing you know he is benched and the linebackers are de-emphasized.  Leaving Tom Wort and Corey Nelson frustrated and full of questions.  Tom decided to head to the NFL, while Corey decided to hang in for his senior year and it looks like that decision is gonig to pay off.

Mike Stoops and Tim Kish have seen the error in their alignments and schemes last year and are now modifying the defense so there is more pressure and linebackers are back in vogue.  This has to be music to Corey's ears as he needs a big senior season to attempt to realize his dream of playing in the NFL.  He has all the tools to play in the "League", he just needs the opportunity to show his skills on the big stage.  Is this a Sooner dream that will be realized?  Let's hope so.

OU Linebackers Back In The Game In 2013?

OU Linebackers Back In The Game In 2013? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Are the linebackers in play this spring and next season or will the Sooners once again play more defensive backs in an attempt to stop the pass-happy Big12 teams?

Well, at least for now the coaches and players are saying that the Sooners will play their 4-2-5 defensive scheme primarily and linebackers will be an important part of that defensive package.  They have some good ones ready to step up and play, but one has to wonder what happens the first time a tight-end or slot reciever finds a seam and outruns a linebacker for a big play or touchdown.  Will the Sooners revert back to more defensive backs or do what many other teams do and apply more pressure on the quarterback in an attempt to force some errant throws or to disrupt the other teams passing plays.  Maybe they will go to a 3-4 defensive scheme that has been discussed actively this spring.  Who knows, but it will be interesting.  Stay tuned...

QB Guru Says Landry Jones A First-Round Pick, Mel Kiper Says Fifth-Round Choice

QB Guru Says Landry Jones A First-Round Pick, Mel Kiper Says Fifth-Round Choice | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Quarterback guru George Whitfield Jr., who has worked with numerous top quarterbacks and Landry Jones says that he believes landry will be a first-round selection when all is said and done.  This stands in stark contrast to Mel Kiper, who believes that landry's immobility and decision-making have dropped him back to possibly the fifth-round in the upcoming NFL Draft.

While Landry's arm and winning record against top notch opponents will likely create enough excitement for at least one NFL team to select Landry on the first or second day, I beleive the first round is not likely given all the talent that is available early.

Landry's NFL fortunes come down to him investing in himself and regardless of where he is selected, going into camp and improving his mobility and showing that his decision-making can make the cut.  It will not be easy, but Landry does have four years of major college football behind him and some physical tools.  Maybe a backup position and few million dollars will be enough, time will tell.

Where do you think Landry will be selected in the NFL Draft?  Do you think he will start in the NFL?

Scheduling Top Out Of Conference Teams Is The Right Call

Scheduling Top Out Of Conference Teams Is The Right Call | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Bob Stoops and the Sooner have continually schedule elite out of conference teams on their schedule during his coaching tenure.  It seems to be Castiglione and Stoops mantra, so the strength of schedule (SOS) is high and helped them in the BCS rankings.  It has helped push Ou past others will the records were similar, just ask Texas fans.

Now, that we are on the cusp of the playoff post-season the strength of schedule may even be more important.  This means that Stoops and company are making the right decisions and the Sooner faithful should be very proud of the Sooner scheduling.

What do you think about the Sooners scheduling elite out of conference teams each year?

OU Spring Football Starts Today With New Coaches, Players and Hopes

OU Spring Football Starts Today With New Coaches, Players and Hopes | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Stoops has changed his staff by five in just over a year, starting with Brent Venerables heading to Clemson before last season.  Many of the new coaches have specific and focused assignments and the belief is this will bring better results on the field.  This influx of new coaches and potentially schemes is seen as a positive by most in the Sooner Nation.

Add in the three-way quarterback competition and the couple of new players joining the team at mid-term just in time for spring ball and you have the potential for some substantive changes that could potentially bring a more solid and focused team to bear in the fall and produce substantive results and get the Sooners back in the national title picture.

What do yuo think about all the changes?  Is it enough?

OU Has 40 to 1 Odds To Win The 2013-14 National Championship. Wanna Bet?

OU Has 40 to 1 Odds To Win The 2013-14 National Championship. Wanna Bet? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The Las vegas Oddsmakers believe OU has little chance to compete for  the 2013-14 BCS national title due to the quarterback competition, the defensive remake and the coaching changes.  But too be honest, 40 to 1 odds and fter seeing who they put in front of us, I have my doubts as to the decision-making.  Seriously, Louisville, OSU and Stanford...not likely at all and in my opinion, not as likely as the Sooners.

It is interesting how changes that can be positive like the quaterback competition can be viewed as a liability.  Just look at how many freshman or first time starting quarterbacks have made a positive or powerful impact on their teams repsective results.  Johnny Football and Robert Griffin III leap to mind instantly.  Who is to say that one of our three impressive quarterbacks and the addition of the run threat will not have the same impact?  Not me...

The Sooner's spring practices are truly going ot be important to the team's near future prospects.  Are you willing to bet on it?

Are Star Football Players Really That Fast, Tall Or Strong? Probably Not!

Are Star Football Players Really That Fast, Tall Or Strong? Probably Not! | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The linked article actually illuminates a common recruiting issue that masks the effectiveness of the star rating systems used by Scout, Rivals, etc..., as it is clear that players are not as tall or fast as advertised.

This is further compounded as the players leave college and hopefully enter the draft and the potential teams are dissapointed by the outcomes of the testing of certain so-called star players.  This explains why so-so players coming out of college can become superstars in the NFL and some of the Heisman or All-American type college players can't make it in the NFL.

What do you think of this issue?  How to resolve this issue?  Does it need to be resolved?

Stoops Adds The Last Piece To The Sooner Coaching Puzzle | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The University oF Oklahoma announced the hiring of Jay Boulware to the Sooner coaching staff, as tight ends and special teams coach.  Thereby adding the last piece of the coaching puzzle to Bob Stoop's re-invigorated staff.   Jay is an accomplished recruiter and coach and a welcome addition to the new look sooner coaching staff.

Jay was the special teams coach at Auburn previously and was highly thought of amongst his peers.  Having a coach focusing on the special teams at OU will be a welcome outcome and one the Sooner Nation will likely embrace, as it has been one of the criticisms of Bob' coaching appproach in the last few years.

So welcome aboard Jay!

OU's Football Program Is The Most Prestigious Program Over The Last 74 Seasons

OU's Football Program Is The Most Prestigious Program Over The Last 74 Seasons | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The University of Oklahoma's football team is and has been the the top team in prestige points since 1956.  The ESPN research department calculated the points to determine where teams would place in total prestige points for the last 73 seasons, since 1936 (Beginning of AP Poll).

It was unecessary to calculate prior to 1936,as there were so many anomolies and different championship claims by a myriad of organizations that it does not stand the lithmus test.

When you look at the makeup of the prestige points awarded to the Sooners you truly start to understand the amazing winning tradition of Oklahoma football. One amazing indicator is that the Sooners have had or shared their conference's best record an eye-opening 40 times.

Did you truly know how prestigious Oklahoma's program is before reading this post and the linked article?

Why Is OU's Kendal Thompson The Mystery Candidate?

Why Is OU's Kendal Thompson The Mystery Candidate? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Listening to Bob Stoops and the other coaches during the bowl practivce leading up to the Cotton Bowl, they praised Kendal's ability and escapability, yet as we approach spring practices, he remains a serious underdog to win the quarterback battle.  It will be interesting to see how the coaches choose between the three strong candidates as this battle may well define how the Sooners do next fall.

While Thompson remains the underdog in this Spring's battle for the starting quarterback position, he does have the tools to succeed. But he must bring all his skills and capabilities to bear to win out over experienced Blake Bell and popular trevor Knight this spring.

How do you think Kendal will do against the competition this spring?

For OU And Texas Change Is Afoot In 2013

For OU And Texas Change Is Afoot In 2013 | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: In this post by Travis Haney on his ESPN.com Blog, he discusses in summary the many changes that OU and Texas are making to adjust for the Read-Option (Think Johnny Manzeil) and the SEC's continued dominance of the National Championship position.  It was obvious and the two fan bases were literally up in arms over the lack of meaningful change by both coaching staffs.  While their issues may be slightly different, the need to adjust to some of the popular schemes that are driving the high flying offenses of some of the elite teams like Oregon, Alabama and Texas A&M was apparent.

Now, both teams have made changes to their respective coaching staffs, modified their schemes and are drilling their players to execute against these changes and become highly competent quickly, as the two fan bases are restless.  Although, the Texas folks have a steeper hill to climb given their record and struggles over the last three years.

Both, OU and Texas' upcoming spring games are going to be televised on Fox SouthWest and Longhorn network respectively.  So, it will be interesting to see how these changes take hold and whether they will allow either the Sooners or Longhorns back to the "Elite" level this season or next.

OU Men's Basketball Season Comes To An End; But Brighter Days Ahead | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: The OU men's basketball team's season came to end last night as the lost to San Diego Stae University 70-55 to end the tourney hopes.

But, there are brighter days ahead as Coach Kruger has some new young offensive talent joining the Sooners for next season and they really just need a bit more offense to be really competitive.  Their defense was good this season, but their offense was up and down a little too much.

The Sooner Nation should be really proud of the 20-12 season capped by an invitation to the NCAA tourney.  Boomer!

OU Seems To Have Found A New Star At Conrerback

OU Seems To Have Found A New Star At Conrerback | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Cortez Johnson's transfer from Arizona seem to get little attention when it happened during the "Mike Stoops returns to OU" timeframe, but it is making waves now.  Cortez has been emerging during the spring practices and making waves as he looks to lock down the corner position opposite Aaron Colvin.

The Sooners need some star talent on defense as Mike Stoops looks to rebuild a defense that was burned far to often for big plays last year.  Stopping the spread offenses of the Big12 is no laughin matter as they tend to rack up high scores and huge yards aginst in-conference and out of conference foes alike.  So Cortez emerging must be music to the coaches ears, as it will allow more defensive pressure to be applied because the corner have their assignments handled and the lineman and linebackers can turn it on and get to the quarterback.

The article linked to this post is just one of several talking about Cortez's abilities and emergence. This is great because developing young players was once one of Mike Stoops calling cards and it looks like it might be again.  Glad to see Cortez getting it done.

After Tough Loss To Iowa State, OU Looks For Positive NCAA Tournament Draw

After Tough Loss To Iowa State, OU Looks For Positive NCAA Tournament Draw | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The Sooner's mens basketball team is hoping for a good draw later today as the selection committee makes it choices and fills the brackets.

The Iowa tate loss in the Big12 Tournament was especially frustrating for the for Coach Lon Kruger as the Sooners gave away a big lead late in the 2nd half and allowed the cyclones to make a 25-6 run to take the leas and the win.

Now, the Sooners fate is left in the hands of the selection committee after some tough losses late in the season and a bad draw could pit them against a bigger and more phydsical team of which the Sooners have struggled against this season.

The good thing is the selection wait is almost over.  Will the Sooners be a 8 or 9 seed or due to the struggles in the back half will they be a 10, 11 or 12 seed, which makes it a tougher run.

What do you think?

Will A Running Quarterback Produce Better Results For OU Next Fall?

Will A Running Quarterback Produce Better Results For OU Next Fall? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The Sooners have propelled themselves to the top of the Big12 heap and have stayed there using a pass-happy offense that features a drop-back passer and big offensive line.  Now, as Bob Stoops and company add the Zone Read to their multiple spread offense it will be exciting to see the new dimension that a runnig quarterback with skills brings to the Sooner offensive gameplan.  Rumors are that all three quarterbacks are performing well early in the spring session.  So, we could have some additional explosiveness come this fall.

Will A Dual Threat Quarterback At OU Pay Dividends This Fall? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

A Sooner quarterback who is a run threat in addition to a strong passer is music to the Sooner Nation's ears.  After seven years of pocket passing, the change to a double threat utilizing the zone read, in addition to the spread gives the coaches and fans hopes that the Sooner can return to the top of the college football world.

Spring practice starts tomorrow and the new look Sooners will take to the practice field with new looks, personnel and coaches.  How well Bob Stoops and his staff can piece all the new additions together will have a strong impact on the results we will see this fall.  Will the new look Sooners win yet another Big12 Championship and be in the running for a national championship or will this be a rebuilding year that will pay dividends next year?

What are your thoughts on the new look Sooners?

What about having a quarterback who is also a running threat?

This Saturday In Norman The Best Quarterback Battle In College Football Begins

This Saturday In Norman The Best Quarterback Battle In College Football Begins | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Spring practice starts this saturday and the competition is heating up,  This is going to be one of the most competitive quarterback battles in the college ranks this year and the fans know it and are starting to speculate.  Will it be Blake Bell, Trevor Knight or Kendal Thompson who comes out on top.  Nobody knows at this point and the coaches are giving any clues as to who has the edge.

It will be a different type of competition from years prior as OU transitions to read option or running complement to the spread.  So, none of the three candidates are pro-style quarteracks like Landry Jones and Sam Bradford, but instead they all are accomplished runner and passers who can spread the field out and put downhill pressure on the defensive backfield. It should be a great competition.

Is The 3-4 Defensive Alignment The Answer To The Sooners Needs?

Is The 3-4 Defensive Alignment The Answer To The Sooners Needs? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Is the 3-4 defensive alignment on tap for the Sooners beginning this spring?  Many in the press and from around the Sooner Nation continue to speculate the Sooners moving to the 3-4 from the 4-3, where the defensive ends become outside linebackers, which better fits the current players.

It will be interesting to see if this change comes to pass, as Mike Stoops seeks to improve dramatically from the defense he put on the field last year. A solid defense with the offensive firepower the Sooners have stockpiled could lead to a strong season and possibly another Big12 trophy in the case.

There are rumors around his arrogance and attitude toward fans, comments on his passing ability and whether he will win the quarterback race.  It is spawning lots of discussion and speculation about Blake and whether he really is the quarterback of the future for the Sooners.

The Belldozer package has defintely given him the experience edge, but Kendall Thompson and Trevor Knight have skills and will push Bell. Spring practice should be quite the spectacle and provide the Sooner faithful with a great deal of entertainment.
