OU Has 40 to 1 Odds To Win The 2013-14 National Championship. Wanna Bet?

OU Has 40 to 1 Odds To Win The 2013-14 National Championship. Wanna Bet? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

The Las vegas Oddsmakers believe OU has little chance to compete for  the 2013-14 BCS national title due to the quarterback competition, the defensive remake and the coaching changes.  But too be honest, 40 to 1 odds and fter seeing who they put in front of us, I have my doubts as to the decision-making.  Seriously, Louisville, OSU and Stanford...not likely at all and in my opinion, not as likely as the Sooners.

It is interesting how changes that can be positive like the quaterback competition can be viewed as a liability.  Just look at how many freshman or first time starting quarterbacks have made a positive or powerful impact on their teams repsective results.  Johnny Football and Robert Griffin III leap to mind instantly.  Who is to say that one of our three impressive quarterbacks and the addition of the run threat will not have the same impact?  Not me...

The Sooner's spring practices are truly going ot be important to the team's near future prospects.  Are you willing to bet on it?

ESPN's Schlabach: College football's Way-Too-Early 2013 Top 25

Sooner 4OU Commentary: Even though this season just ended in dissapointment with the blowout loss to Texas A&M, it is never too early to see where the so-called professional sports journalists have OU placed nationally next year. So, OU checks in at No. 17 in Mark Schlabach's early 2013 Top 25. Probably about right given how the three losses played out.  Hopefully, Stoops can make some changes and get OU back on track.  Scrapping the spread offense coupled with a nasty defense would be a nice start. Boomer!

Article Excerpt: 17. Oklahoma Sooners: The Landry Jones era at OU ended with a thud in the Sooners' ugly loss to the Aggies at the Cotton Bowl. Now coach Bob Stoops and offensive coordinator Josh Heupel will begin the task of replacing Jones, a record-setting quarterback, who threw for 4,267 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions this past season. Sophomore Blake Bell, affectionately known as the Belldozer because of his 6-foot-6, 254-pound frame, is the favorite to win the starting job, but he'll have to hold off junior Drew Allen and freshmen Trevor Knight and Kendal Thompson. The Sooners also will have to rebuild their defensive line and replace a couple of starters in the secondary. Even after former Arizona coach Mike Stoops took over the defense, it still struggled against high-powered offenses in the Big 12. The Sooners will play some difficult away games next season, with contests at Notre Dame, Kansas State and Oklahoma State, along with their annual showdown against Texas in Dallas.

Landry Jones' OU Career Will End Where It All Began

Landry Jones' OU Career Will End Where It All Began | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

As often happens in marriage, the husband had his wife to thank.

In the case of the Cotton Bowl, and its uniqueness to Oklahoma's quarterback, Landry Jones had Whitney Hand.

"Whitney actually told me, I think it was the day after the Cotton Bowl was announced, that we were gonna go play there," Jones said of Cowboys Stadium. "She said how interesting it was to see how I've come full circle."

Sept. 5, 2009, Jones made his college debut under the JerryWorld Jumbo tron against BYU. Jan. 4, he'll take a bow as a Sooner on the same field against Texas A&M.

mclynd's insight:

Sooner4OU Commentary: It is my hope that Landry ends his Sooner career on a high note, by having a great bowl game and outing versus the Aggies. He has given OU four years and set numerous records along the way. While some will criticize his failure to lead the Sooners to a national championship during his tenure, it is subjective whether he had the surrounding cast to realize that elusive goal. Drive on Landry and make it happen!

Oklahoma Sooners Need Help From Texas To Make BCS

Oklahoma Sooners Need Help From Texas To Make BCS | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commnetary:  Well this article is right about one of the BCS qualifying scenarios, but there are others.  So, no one needs to get to caught up in the "help from Texas thing" as it will be a crazy game i am sure of that.  K-State is the better team, but as we have seen so far this season anything can happen on any given day.  I still believe that the Sooners will get a BCS bowl bid, but it will be close.  What do you think?

Article Excerpt: The BCS Championship and Rose Bowl matchups will be decided this weekend. The ACC, Big 12 and Big East champions will all get an automatic bid, leaving only three at-large bids. Florida and Oregon are likely to be guaranteed a bid with each school being ranked in the top 5 of the BCS, leaving one bid open. If Kent State beats Northern Illinois in the MAC Championship this weekend, it will likely take the final at-large bid by jumping into the top 16.

The Sooners need some help.

Oklahoma has to beat TCU in its final conference game and then root for Texas. The Sooners have to hope that a team they beat by 42 points can upset Kansas State at home. If Texas is unable to beat Kansas State, then Oklahoma may be shut out of the BCS picture completely.

Notre Dame And OU Could Meet Again; This Time In The Fiesta Bowl

Notre Dame And OU Could Meet Again; This Time In The Fiesta Bowl | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary:  I for one would love to see a rematch between OU and Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.  It would give them the chance to redeem themselves and put OU back in the top rung heading into next year.  What do you think?  Boomer!

Article Excerpt: The bowl possibilities for Oklahoma, with its two current losses, are aplenty. If the Sooners do end up in a BCS bowl game, it is almost certain to be the Fiesta or Rose Bowl.

If the Sooners do end up in a BCS bowl game, it is almost certain to be the Fiesta or Rose Bowl. Scenarios by which Oklahoma plays in the Orange Bowl or the Sugar Bowl are far-fetched and highly improbable.

Why The Sooners' "Play Like a Champion" Motto May Be The Original

Why The Sooners' "Play Like a Champion" Motto May Be The Original | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Kurt Burris touched the sign as he ran onto Owen Field for the 1953 Notre Dame game. Clendon Thomas did the same before the 1957 Notre Dame game.

Leon Cross touched the sign before the 1962 Notre Dame in Norman. Likewise Granville Liggins in 1966.

PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY

Bud Wilkinson put up the sign early in his OU coaching career. Maybe in 1947. No later than 1950 or 1951.

That sign today sits in the Switzer Center museum. The words are reprinted on the mural in the tunnel that leads onto Owen Field. So Casey Walker and Trey Millard and Bronson Irwin and Javon Harris will touch the same message as they take the field to play Notre Dame on Saturday night.

Is A 3-4 Defensive Scheme In OU's Near Future?

Is A 3-4 Defensive Scheme In OU's Near Future? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: It would not be surprising if this article was "on the mark", as the defensive perfromance since 2008 has been average, if not poor.  Something has be done given the shortage of defensive tackle talent and the recruiting difficulties that have been well documented by the mainstream press.  The concern with going to the 3-4 is our linebacker depth and talent, as well as, the hybrids that the Sooners employ were the linebackers and safteys are largely interchangable.  The "hybrid experiment" was utilized to try and slow down the spread being used by the majority of Big12 teams, but it is vulnerable to the run as we have a ll witnessed.  West Virginia's Austin showed us how vulnerable we are when utlizing the hybrids regardless of the scheme.  This Spring will be very interesting with the change in personnel and schemes, not too mention if the coaches change rumors turn out ot be true.  What do you think about the Sooners potentially employing a 3-4 defense?

Flawed Computer Polls Facilitating Kent State's Possible BCS Run At OU's Expense

Flawed Computer Polls Facilitating Kent State's Possible BCS Run At OU's Expense | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary:  The entire Sooner Nation needs to be big Northern Illinois supporters this weekend.  Northern Illinois must beat Kent State to ensure that OU's get an At-Large bid to the BCS if they beat TCU this weekend.  The new Non-quailfier rules are in full affect and could be damaging to OU's efforts.  There are other ways for OU to get in the BCS mix, but this is the most likely.  Go Huskies (Northern Illinois that is)!  Boomer!

Article Excerpt: Oklahoma appears headed for a BCS at-large bid, most likely a trip to the Sugar Bowl. While it hasn't been a perfect season in Norman, the Sooners have a 9-2 record with losses to Kansas State and Notre Dame, two top-10 teams. They blew out Texas in the Red River Rivalry. Moreover, they will survive the Big 12 with a single conference loss if they can beat TCU on Saturday. There are four at-large slots available for teams that did not win their conference, and OU will line up fourth behind Notre Dame, Florida and Oregon should Kansas St. win the Big 12 on Saturday with a win over Texas.

But Oklahoma could lose its BCS bid to Kent State.

West Virginia Is In The Way Of OU's BCS Bowl Hopes

West Virginia Is In The Way Of OU's BCS Bowl Hopes | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary: This week's game has become bigger with Alabama's loss and K-State moving in to the top slot in the BCS rankings. If OU can get the job done in Morgantown then they are lining themselves up for a potential BCS bowl bid. If they continue to win out, a slot in the Fiesta Bowl becomes very likely.

Article Excerpt: Sooners still hope to get a BCS bowl bid, while the Mountaineers are targeting a bowl, period.

During July's Big 12 Media Days, lots of anticipatory chatter centered around a game that was nearly four months away.

West Virginia defensive end Will Clarke, speaking then of his team's late-season showdown with Oklahoma, said, “In every season, you always have that one game that everyone circles, either in their mind, or their apartment, or somewhere.”

Saturday, as was expected, a coveted BCS berth will be on the line — for one team, at least — when the Big 12 stalwart and flashy newcomer meet in Morgantown.

OU Focuses On Avoiding Turnovers Against Notre Dame

OU Focuses On Avoiding Turnovers Against Notre Dame | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commnetary: This game is rapidly becoming a bell-weather for both teams as they both have higher BCS aspirations.  It will be interesting to see how the first quarter unfolds and to see how each coaching staff slowly reveals their gameplans in trying to take advantage of each other's tendencies and weakenesses.  It should be a masterful game of turf filled chess, with huge stakes hanging in the balance. I still believe this is an OU win if they can stay away from the turnover bug.  What do you think?

Article Excerpt: Bob Stoops was asked many different ways during the week to break down Saturday's Notre Dame-Oklahoma football game.

The Sooners coach pointed out one simple thing to watch for in the battle between college football heavyweights.

"Turnovers are always a major issue in any game, let alone when you have two teams in the top 10," Stoops said. "They're a factor. They were a factor earlier in the season with us.

"We've got to do a good job taking care of the ball. To me, it's the biggest factor in games like this."

Oklahoma has done a solid job in its past three games. OU has forced nine turnovers (three each against Texas Tech, Texas and Kansas) while the offense has only given up the ball once.

OU-Notre Dame About More Than Tradition

OU-Notre Dame About More Than Tradition | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops felt the need to talk to his team about the history of Oklahoma-Nebraska before the 2000 game.

It was a showdown of No. 1 vs. No. 2 and the most significant game of the season that would eventually wind up with OU winning the national title.

There is no such plan this week as Oklahoma prepares to play Notre Dame, a legendary rival in the history of college football.

But, unlike Nebraska, which was a conference rival and included a series that dated back over dozens of games, the history of OU and Notre Dame is much shorter. And, not so sweet.

Despite The Series' History, Notre Dame Looks At OU As Just Another Game

Despite The Series' History, Notre Dame Looks At OU As Just Another Game | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Commentary:  The irish can look at this game anyway they would like as the Sooners are in strong mid-season form and hitting on all cylinders, while the Irish are struglling against fair opponents.  My prediction is OU 35 - ND 17.  Now...we just nedd K-State to drop a game or two.  Boomer!

Article Excerpt: The Irish do not want to get caught up in the past. They're focused on the present — and that's working toward a possible national championship berth. This week, OU is in the way.

That's the message Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly is sending to his players this week. Almost 900 miles from South Bend, Ind., Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is sending the Sooners a different message about Saturday's game in Norman.

“Probably the most anticipated game here since 2000,” Stoops said, “when Nebraska came in here ranked No. 1 in the country and we were No. 2. It was a pretty incredible day.”

This Week 9 matchup that interests even ESPN's GameDay crew is between No. 5-ranked Notre Dame and No. 7 Oklahoma.

OU No. 9 In First BCS Standings

OU No. 9 In First BCS Standings | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Photo: JOHN CLANTON/Tulsa World

Sooner4OU Commentary:  OU has made it back into the national title conversation and with it's tough schedule and strong defense anything is possible.  Mike Stoops is defintely making a difference and the team overall is finding it's personality at the right time.

Article Excerpt: Oklahoma was No. 9 in the first BCS standings of the season released Sunday night. That's the lowest the Sooners have debuted since 2009, when they weren't in the BCS top 25, but at least they made an appearance.

Three weeks ago, after dropping to 2-1 with a home field loss to Kansas State, it seemed far-fetched to think OU could make a charge to the top 10. But that's just what has happened, thanks to wins at Texas Tech and over archrival Texas.

The Sooners' No. 7 coaches poll ranking, No. 9 Harris Poll ranking and No. 10 computer ranking put them ahead of USC at No. 9 in the BCS.

West Virginia Vs. Oklahoma For The Big12 Championship?

West Virginia Vs. Oklahoma For The Big12 Championship? | Sooner4OU | Scoop.it

Sooner4OU Original Commentary:  This has all the makings of the pivotal game for all the Big12 chips.  West Virginia has a style of offense that the Sooners have struggled with defensively in the past, so it will be imperative that Mike Stoops and company be prepared and  mix their schemes up, so the Mountaineers are confused on offense.  The Sooners offense must score often and early to take the ruckus Morgantown home crowd out of the game.  This is crucial as the home town advantage in morgantown is infamous, or maybe notorious is a better descritpion.  Regardless, the Sooners must be prepared and not have a slow start that they are very capable of on the road, if they are to come out victrious.

Article Excerpt: No school fit its realignment landing spot like West Virginia. Turbo-charged offense led by a dynamic coach and QB and all that jazz. Dennis Dodd says it makes one almost forget about preseason favorite Oklahoma.
