Women Who Code hack night | Composite | Code it | Scoop.it

It was a lot of fun and even if it stays such a short event I recommend it. I think it will inevitably spawn some all day hackmeets though since no one wanted to leave or stop working on their projects 1 hour into it!! Actually, I would like to invite all the Women Who Code and CodeChix people to Noisebridge, which is a fantastic hackerspace open 24/7 (with an accessible bathroom and an elevator) and to the upcoming Hackmeet unconference.

Back to Basics: The Key to Mastering Software Development

Back to Basics: The Key to Mastering Software Development | Code it | Scoop.it
With his book review of C# How-To, Michael Campbell argues for why software developers must master the basics of software development.

In a recent discussion with my oldest daughter about the importance of basics and piano practice, I found myself reaching for a beginner-to-Intermediate C# 4.0 book with Post-it Flags "flagging" a large number of pages. What I hoped to communicate to my daughter (who was bored with the basics of piano) was that even though I've been professionally developing for over a decade, I'm still constantly focusing on the basics—because I'm convinced that mastery of anything only comes from a solid understanding of the basics.

Did Kevin Mitnick do a disservice to the security community?

Some say famed hacker Kevin Mitnick is blowing a golden opportunity to cast the hacker community in a more positive light as he pushes his book "Ghost in the Wires."

I'm not sure that's the case, though.

I have not yet read "Ghost in the Wires," though I plan to after I finish a memoir from Aerosmith singer-songwriter Stephen Tyler. I wasn't interested at first, since I know Mitnick's story well.

For those who aren't as familiar, Mitnick was once the most-wanted hacker in the United States. He was an undisputed master at social engineering and broke into dozens of networks as a fugitive. He went on to serve five years in prison and has since built a successful consultancy.

When hacking could turn deadly | Tuwitter Lifestyle

When hacking could turn deadly | Tuwitter Lifestyle | Code it | Scoop.it
Hundreds of cyber-security geeks watched recently as Jay Radcliffe stood on a Las Vegas stage and hacked into his own insulin pump, disabling its life-saving therapy.

The 33-year-old cyber-security researcher said the pump had “pretty much no security on it” — a vulnerability it shares with pacemakers, implantable heart defibrillators and other medical devices.

His presentation at the annual Black Hat computer security conference this month highlighted a risk the medical-device industry has downplayed, arguing that only someone with advanced skills could hack the devices.

RankMyHack.com Rewards Hackers With World Ranking, Bounties | Code it | Scoop.it

A new Web site, Rankmyhack.com, lets hackers submit and rate each others' hacks in order to determine the world's best hacker.

"[By] using an official RankMyHack forum signature banner, online reputation becomes less about a peer-assessed popularity contest and more about the hackers raw ability to compromise Web sites and servers," wrote UK hacker and Rankmyhack.com founder "s0lar" in the site's intro page. According to the New York Times, the site has picked up at least 700 members since it launched at the end of July.

How PHP is Broken and How It Can Be Fixed « Epixa – Court Ewing, Web Developer

How PHP is Broken and How It Can Be Fixed « Epixa – Court Ewing, Web Developer | Code it | Scoop.it
PHP’s development process has been broken for a long time, and the failures of that process have swelled since the first ripples began to appear many years ago.

The process didn't necessarily take a downward turn at any point; rather, it seems there was never really a sufficient or sustainable workflow from the start. This is no surprise given the very fluid history of PHP though, and the lack of any sustainable processes may have even been one of the key things that allowed PHP to evolve so quickly into one of the most used programming languages in the world. But that early success doesn't make the PHP development process any less broken.

How to build ScipPy with Python 2.7.2 on CentOS5 | shocksolution.com

If you are going to install iPython (which I highly recommend) you will also need to install:.

sqlite-devel

Installing the “-devel” packages is critical! The basic packages install libraries that end in *.so.3, which cannot be used to link newly built applications. The -devel packages include libraries that end in *.so that are required for building Scipy.

Now, without superuser privileges, download Python 2.7.2, NumPy 1.6.1, and SciPy 0.9.0 to your home directory.

How we use git at Shopify - Shopify

Git is an incredibly powerful tool that can be used in many different ways. I don't believe there is a 'correct' workflow for using git, just many different options that work for particular situations and people. The workflow that I am going to describe won't work for everyone, and not everyone at Shopify uses git in the same way - you have to modify and massage it to shape your needs and the way you work. I don't consider myself an expert with git, but am comfortable enough with the tool to handle just about everything I might need to do. If there's anything I can't figure out, James MacAulay is our resident git expert in the office and always willing to help out.

Okay, lets get down to business.

Google Enables Developers to Connect C Code to HTML5

Google Enables Developers to Connect C Code to HTML5 | Code it | Scoop.it
Google has just added native client (NaCl) support in Chrome 14 beta, which enables developers to leverage C and C++ interfaces for their web applications.

NaCl is integrated as a sandboxing technology, which allows the browser to safely execute platform independent and untrusted code without being a threat to the browser itself, even if the software may be harmful.

NaCl was integrated for the first time in Chrome 5 behind a flag and is enabled via Pepper, a collection of APIs that can connect C and C++ code to modern websites that run HTML5 technologies. "This means that once you’ve ported your code to Native Client, it will work across different operating systems, and you only need to maintain one code base," Google said.

Kingpin: How One Hacker Took Over the Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground

Kingpin: How One Hacker Took Over the Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground | Code it | Scoop.it

Readers of a certain age might remember the “phone phreaks” of the 1960s and ’70s who deviously manipulated telephone technology in order to make free long distance calls, disclose American Telephone and Telegraph secrets and, in general, drive AT&T crazy.

In retrospect, those characters seem almost ingenuous and amusing, more interested in relishing their naughty exploits than with mayhem. But there’s nothing childlike or amusing about today’s version of phone phreaks: criminals who, for plunder (lots of it) and other more sinister reasons, ruthlessly and zealously inflict havoc on and through cyber networks.

Kevin Poulsen’s new book, Kingpin:

How One Hacker Took Over the Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground, is a flawed but fraught overview of our current digital underworld, where such vile hoodlums thrive.
