11 Journalism Jobs You May Hold in the Future | Center for Sustainable Journalism | Collaborative Content-Curation: new Forms of Reading & Writing #curation #journalism #education #e-learning | Scoop.it

"If you look, you’ll find plenty of signs that this field won’t go away. Journalism isn’t dying; it’s evolving. To survive, we’re all going to have to get more creative and adapt as new technologies and methodologies appear. The traditional titles–reporter, copy editor, photographer, page designer–may fade away or take on new meanings yet journalism won’t altogether become extinct, even despite corruption and the frustration felt by overworked, underpaid journalists.
...Some newer titles in journalism include social media strategist, multimedia reporter and blogger. Here are some more jobs that are beginning to appear now ...
What skills or jobs do you think journalists might have in the future? Have you figured out what you want in a journalism job?"

The Filter Bubble: Algorithm vs. Curator & the Value of Serendipity

The Filter Bubble: Algorithm vs. Curator & the Value of Serendipity | Collaborative Content-Curation: new Forms of Reading & Writing #curation #journalism #education #e-learning | Scoop.it

"EP: The great thing about algorithms is that, once you’ve got them rolling, they’re very cheap. Facebook doesn’t have to pay many people to edit the News Feed. But the News Feed also lacks any real curatorial values — what you’re willing to Like is a poor proxy for what you’d actually like to see or especially what you need to see. Human curators are way better at that, for now — knowing that even though we don’t click on Afghanistan much we need to hear about it because, well, there’s a war on. The sweet spot, at least for the near future, is probably a mix of both ...

Why curate content?"

Content Strategist as Digital Curator featured in Curation Nation | Erin Scime | Collaborative Content-Curation: new Forms of Reading & Writing #curation #journalism #education #e-learning | Scoop.it

"I’m looking to a future in which the digital curator maintains an important role in cutting through the digital clutter, but skeptical that merely anyone can call themselves one. Rosenbaum concludes that “we are all curators.” I see this happening in off-line forms as well: curator of clothing, accessories and food items. ... but I like to think of the talent of curating like writing itself. Technically we all know how to write – but it takes a special talent to be able to string words together into a prose that moves us. And it takes yet another talent to be able to create a layer of context to simplify, interpret and add color.

Curation. I can’t wait to see where this goes!"

Online Curation: The What, Why And How - An Interview With Micah Sifry

Online Curation: The What, Why And How - An Interview With Micah Sifry | Collaborative Content-Curation: new Forms of Reading & Writing #curation #journalism #education #e-learning | Scoop.it
Why is content curation so important? In this video interview, I recorded with Micah Sifry, co-founder and editor of the Personal Democracy Forum, you can taste one more viewpoint and explanation of why news and content curation are...

"Curation is not just a fad or the equivalent of sharing a few pictures and funny links with your Facebook friends. Yes, at some level that is content curation too, but what Micah Sifry wants to highlight is how relevant it is to understand that serving a market of 10,000 info-hungry specialists is going to increasingly be a business opportunity, unlike what has been happening in the past, with publishers / editors / bloggers all vying for "traffic" and large, mass-like audiences.

This is going to change. "Niche media has absolutely got a healthy future" he says happily. And you don't need to depend or feel constrained by Google as there are several alternative avenues that you can use to make yourself be found.

What you need to pay attention to, instead, is the fact that Google does have the power to define the world, to be the lens through which we see the world."

The Art of Curation: An Interview with Maria Popova from BrainPickings | NeboBlog: Interactive Marketing, Design & Ramblings. Brought to you by NeboWeb | Collaborative Content-Curation: new Forms of Reading & Writing #curation #journalism #education #e-learning | Scoop.it

"As more and more people and brands take to producing digital content ... I had the pleasure of interviewing the curator of the popular site Brain Pickings, Maria Popova, and picking her brain on this topic.
...
Brain Pickings is a highly curatorial endeavor. And the art of curation isn’t about the individual pieces of content, but about how these pieces fit together, what story they tell by being placed next to each other, and what statement the context they create makes about culture and the world at large. Every piece of content on Brain Pickings is hand-picked for embodying the sort of cultural interestingness at the core of our curatorial vision – it’s creative, compelling and makes a meaningful contribution to the world; it offers a justification to be curious and enriches you in the process of indulging that curiosity.

Great curation is also about pattern-recognition – seeing various pieces of culture and spotting similarities across them that paint a cohesive picture of a larger trend. Brain Pickings addresses this with our signature “omnibus” posts that spotlight 3-10 examples of a larger creative or cultural trend – cross-disciplinary conferences, urban guerrilla interventions, vintage-inspired posters for modern movies, hand-cut book sculptures, you name it."

"We felt a lot of people wanted to express themselves online but weren't satisfied with blogging or status updates on social networks. We felt we could create a new form of expression that could be as easy as updating a status or sending a tweet… but could be much more complete and satisfying by being a real online media.

The other aspect was about building a topic-centric social media. Right now, social media are people-centric networks."

More transparence: visible Tools??

"Imagine a curatorial tool, called Cyur ... that is examining stories in my upstream: ... Some of those sources are agents like Techmeme, a curatorial system, itself. But unless Techmeme shares the curatorial actions, Cyur would not be able to know that stories pulled from obscurity by Megan tend to pass my interesting filter more frequently than other editors there.

So, on both points, I think acts of curation should form another part of the stream, as metadata, or editorial gestures, just like retweets and reposts, which is what they are like. And I think its odd that she doesn’t see why we would want to see it."

A great example of this type of storyteller is Garrison Keiller. Garrison and his Prairie Home shows do an excellent job in making his stories authentic and related to the listener’s personal experiences."

Six Ways to Use Social Media Tools in Journalism Classes | MindShift | Collaborative Content-Curation: new Forms of Reading & Writing #curation #journalism #education #e-learning | Scoop.it

"4. Social Curation

As newsmakers engage on Twitter and Facebook, it’s important that students know how to collect and annotate these messages. Storify, Curated.by and Keepstream all allow users to gather and embed social media messages for use in blog posts and articles.

As I was gathering ideas for this article, I asked journalism educators on Twitter about their use of these tools in the classroom. I collected their responses using Storify.

While Storify and Keepstream are designed around discrete collections of content, Curated.by is geared more toward ongoing curation.

For that reason, I suggest using Curated.by for student coverage of live events or for long-term collaboration. Another useful feature is that it allows multiple contributors to work together on the same collection.

Storify does allow users to share accounts as “editors,” but I don’t recommend this because it gives students full access to edit all content in each other’s accounts. The privacy features in Curated.by allow users to limit access to specific projects."
