8 Surprising, Depressing, and Hopeful Findings From Global Survey of Environmental Attitudes

8 Surprising, Depressing, and Hopeful Findings From Global Survey of Environmental Attitudes | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Consumers in many countries are adopting eco-friendly behavior, but others aren't ready to be green.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

This is a good benchmark.  But, lumping all Russians or Americans or Chinese together is perhaps not the best way to go about doing this.  There is marked difference in consumption in Moscow vs. Siberia, Los Angeles vs. Alaska, etc.  While the country level aggregation is great, it would be nice if we could see the break down (and especially the variance) of attitudes in the larger countries.

This might make a particularly interesting comparison for some things when it comes to next week and our Coastal Opinions polling is done for the year.

Stories of dismay but also resilience as crisis in food production builds after 18 months of exceptionally wet weather
Sophia Hoolihan's comment, April 22, 4:10 PM
Climate change is causing the severity and frequency of climate events to increase. This makes agricultural operations very challenging. UK farmers are frustrated with the unpredictability of recent weather events, putting their livelihoods at risk. Decreased efficiency in the agriculture industry will directly impact consumers as the supply decreases and prices rise. Food availability is greatly affected by climate change.

Indonesia volcano: Tsunami alert issued after Mount Ruang erupts on remote island

Indonesia volcano: Tsunami alert issued after Mount Ruang erupts on remote island | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
Indonesian authorities on Wednesday ordered hundreds of villagers to evacuate following multiple eruptions of a remote island volcano, raising fears it could collapse into the sea and trigger a tsunami.
Kelly Colindres's comment, April 21, 4:39 PM
Mount Ruang on Ruang Island, North Sulawesi has erupted five times since April 16 causing Indonesian authorities to encourage the island's villagers to evacuate. The increase of volcanic activity increases the suspicion that the landmass can collapse into the sea and may trigger a tsunami. The stratovolcano expelled plumes of ash and lava, causing Tagulandang authorities to warm their residents for falling lava rocks. Lucking there have not been any reported casualties due to the eruptions.

A California farming region is placed on water probation

A California farming region is placed on water probation | Coastal Restoration | Scoop.it
California's water board has for the first time put a farming region on probation for failing to adopt measures to curb excessive pumping of groundwater.
Cameron Montgomery's comment, April 18, 4:22 PM
I can see both sides of the argument for this article with the government and local farmers. On one hand the State regulators are trying to get a control of how much water is being used so that ground level won't sink any further. With that said many local farmers may go out of business due to the extra fees. Many people prefer to buy at a supermarket where food comes in from far away instead of shopping at local farmers markets.
Isabel Ventura's comment, April 19, 6:59 PM
At first reading the title of the article made me think it’s crazy that they would be on water probation. But as I read the article I realize that they’re punishing people who are not following protocol and following the rules.

Floodplain buyouts allow homeowners to move out of harm's way and help the community create open space that can collect flood waters to protect other homes.
Hunter Santana's comment, April 23, 2:39 PM
This is an interesting move to destroy flood prone homes. One one side of the argument, they are reducing the risk of fatalities during a severe flood event. Yet those that are forced to relocate may not be able to financially or physically do so. I hope there is a government program that will assist those who are unable to make the move.

It is certainly vital that PFAS be removed from these waters, but the expense to do so seems quite challenging. Also, I found it interesting to read the recommendations that these water systems will have to either increase their water rates to comply or gain support from other budgets.

PFAS chemicals are incredibly important to avoid, they are chemicals that stay within the body forever, which is why they're known as forever chemicals. Keeping pfas related chemicals out of our water will be difficult but will be something absolutely necessary.
