McQueary Concludes Testimony, Victim One Wrestling Coach Follows

McQueary Concludes Testimony, Victim One Wrestling Coach Follows | Coaching with ethics | Scoop.it

McQueary finished his testimony by reiterating that he did not in fact see enough to tell what exactly was occuring, but he was sure that it was sexual and inappropriate. He also said that he wants to continue to be a football coach at Penn State, and deserves to do so.

The former wrestling coach of Victim 1 also testified and confirmed the previously told story about him walking in on Sandusky on top of the boy "practicing wrestling moves." He didn't think anything of this beacuse, like most other adults at the time, he thought that Jerry Sandusky was "a saint."

Amirah Azziz's insight:

An example of a lack of ethics. The Penn State organization did not follow their own set of Ethics.

The" Wooding" definition of Success breeds winning in more areas the sports. With high moral standards and ethical practices he makes success about the dedication of doing your best instead of winning at all cost.

Dillon Fury's curator insight, September 10, 2014 12:47 PM

Winning the game is not everything. Being successful is not defined by who won the game either.

Garber: Should winning be everything when you're nine?

Garber: Should winning be everything when you're nine? | Coaching with ethics | Scoop.it
One youth baseball team in Utah decided to win at all costs, and is finding out the price might have been too high.
Amirah Azziz's insight:

Wow!  What a seriously ethical dilemma.  I can see both coaches point of views.  I also have to ask the question, why should one coach make a decision that forces the other coach into a corner?  This could have been a great learning experience for both teams, but that choice should not have been forced on another.

Thinking Ethics: Sports

Amirah Azziz's insight:

I'm not really sure how I feel about this on pesonal level.  Morally and ethically, the right thing would be to tell the truth, however, when the referees make a bad call against my team, will they take my word as the athlete and change the call?

As a coach, I will instill in my players to never feel bad about doing the right thing.

The idea of "bounty hunting" in football is not a new phenom.  It is now being seen for what it is and coaches and programs are being held accountable.

Legal and Ethical Responsibilities of a Coach

How many career options can provide the excitement, challenges and satisfaction of coaching? Coaches at all levels experience the pleasure of watching young people develop sport skills and contribute to successful teams. However, coaches also have important legal and ethical obligations to their schools and their athletes. Many of these obligations or responsibilities are natural extensions of the mission and goals of the high school athletic program. Others are defined legally or are expectations of society for a “teacher” in a school activity.

Amirah Azziz's insight:

Many of the ethical responsibilities of a coach lie within us as moral people.  Some must be spelled out.

Jason Cain

Coaches must adhere to legal and ethical responsibilities within the profession. These responsibilities are outlined through certification classes. All coaches must keep athletes safe both physically and emotionally and these standard that they must follow are outlined in the National Association for Sport Physical Education. A coach needs to be a role model for athletes under his or her care.

Renee Seruntine's curator insight, May 14, 2014 3:53 PM

Legal and ethical obligations play an important role in how a coach will teach his or her players.

Dillon Fury's curator insight, September 10, 2014 12:44 PM

There's a lot of weight resting on the shoulders of a coach. They are to make good ethical decisions for their players and themselves.

Amirah Azziz's insight:

There should never be a time when words result in violence.  The children should not be subjected to this.  Where are the ethics when hiring the coaches for this team?  If this was the first issue with the law, then I may look at it as a loss of temper. This wasn't the situation, this man had been previously involved with the law and should not have been on that field coaching impressionable children.
