Leadership is the most overanalyzed, thoroughly dissected, and utterly confused topic in business. It’s amazing how complex and complicated leadership “experts” have made the topic. I know, I am one of them. For over two decades I have actively contributed to the complexification of leadership. I am a senior ranking officer in what can only be called the Legion of Leadership Complexifiers (LLC).

How unfortunate that our popular ideas of what a good leader should be are so often grandiose. Through current media, television, and movies, we expect perfection; a leader is strong, fearless and flawless. If we believe that myth, they should be superheroes, royalty and saviors all rolled into one.

So we become disappointed when our leaders are only human after all. Could it be that we expect too much? If you consider some recent examples of leaders who’ve fallen from grace, you might find that they made very human mistakes; the kind we all make. That isn’t an excuse for bad behaviors; it’s simply a reality that nobody is perfect.

In the end, the best leaders are very human.

The worst lies are the ones you tell yourself over and over again – the ones you live by.  Perhaps someone close to you ingrained these lies in your mind, perhaps you were influenced by the negativity of popular media channels, or perhaps they grew from simple, innocent misunderstandings.

Either way, next time you decide to learn something new for the sake of self-improvement, start by unlearning a lie that has been deceiving you.  Here are nine lies I have unlearned in my own life:

The Center for Creative Leadership did a study with data from 6,731 managers from 38 countries. Their study found that the ability to understand what others are feeling is a skill that clearly contributes to effective leadership. In some cultures, the connection between empathy and performance is particularly striking, placing an even greater value on empathy as a leadership skill.

 

The findings were consistent across the sample: empathy is positively related to job performance. Managers who show more empathy toward direct reports are viewed as better performers in their job by their bosses.

What I found most endearing in this post were the definitions of empathy written by second graders. They explained it beautifully.

The author concludes then that "if you can practice empathy at least at the level these second graders describe it, you'll be a great leader".

In the article there is a reference to teaching and explaining empathy. It is something we need to model and demonstrate. It cannot be reduced to a simple cognitive exercise.

Another great article by expert Mark Graybill, who is gifted at mapping the areas of our brain to leadership behaviors and advicing us on HOW to use the brain to improve the quality of leadership, instead of the opposite.  :)

 

From the article:

 

This part of the brain resides behind our forehead and is often at odds with the inner structures of the brain. These inner structures are responsible for us getting into  "our box", and it builds it in the first place.


And it sometimes builds the box around us, and we’re in our box before we know it.


To be effective leaders we need to prevent this.
