Finding your value in others


+Penny Power says in her book “Know me, like me, follow me”:
In the 21st century people are rebelling against control ….to have followers you need to have the right intention and care deeply about the success of others… Having followers is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow ….

Your ability to be followed will depend on your ability to be a “leader”. Not a leader in the traditional sense, this is not about leading a team, but leading a movement and a set of thoughts. Leadership has to be earned, you are placed in this role by those who follow you, not because you say “I am a leader.”

Had the opportunity to have dinner with Stanley and see him speak last spring at a Stevenson University speaker's series hosted by Dr. Kevin Manning. He was amazing and carried a great message of listening to your junior officers http://www.macpa.org/blog/1571/listen-to-your-junior-officers

 

Juts got his book and it is a fascinating read and chick full of real leadership advice, I highly recommend it!

Certain painful experiences are more likely to precede depressive episodes than others. And some forms of loss can trigger depression more quickly than previously realized

For a long time psychiatrists and psychologists have lumped such triggers together under rather vague umbrella terms, including "severe psychosocial stressors" and "stressful life events." In recent years, however, a few researchers have looked more carefully at the different kinds of events that provoke a depressive episode. The evidence they have collected so far argues for a more nuanced understanding of how stress interacts with individual susceptibility to depression, how quickly depression follows different types of stress, and how best to treat depression in these various situations.

What Is Feedback, Anyway?

The term feedback is often used to describe all kinds of comments made after the fact, including advice, praise, and evaluation. But none of these are feedback, strictly speaking.

 

 

Basically, feedback is information about how we are doing in our efforts to reach a goal.

 

I hit a tennis ball with the goal of keeping it in the court, and I see where it lands—in or out.

 

I tell a joke with the goal of making people laugh, and I observe the audience's reaction—they laugh loudly or barely snicker.

 

I teach a lesson with the goal of engaging students, and I see that some students have their eyes riveted on me while others are nodding off.

Agree 1000% I remember a concept from Practically Radical where they talked about IBM's transformation with a major factor being Humbition - the combination of Humility and Ambition. And the sign on Ronald Reagan's desk that said, "There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit."

It ain’t all rainbows and unicorns.

 

After the YouTube clip ends, after the conference is over, after the teambuilding session–there’s this other thing that happens. Real life leadership.

 

And it’s exhausting. Tiring. Long hours. The certainty that almost any decision you make will not be perfectly agreeable to at least somebody. Cranky bosses. Crappy work environments. It could be any number of things or combination of things, but there are times when you just get discouraged, and I don’t think there’s any shame in that. It’s a normal part of being human, yes?

You’re not some robot that doesn’t have feelings or emotions or needs or whatever. Now some of us may act like robots sometimes, but even then, underneath it all, there’s a beating heart. Almost all of us have been and/or are discouraged. It’s OK. It’s normal. But let’s push into that discouragement a little bit. Better yet, let’s push back a little bit. Here are some reminders for the discouraged leaders among us:

(From the article): The reason why most of us don’t accomplish more is because we set our goals inside our mental barriers, where it’s safe. (That’s why it’s called “the comfort zone.”)

 

But if you want to get unstuck and start getting traction again, you have to set your goals on the other side of the barrier. You don’t have to get crazy, but you do have to stretch yourself and push past the invisible barrier in your head.

 

This is the secret to achieving break-through results.
