Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz said it best: “You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.”

Decades of business consulting and coaching have taught me a lot about the value of thoughtful questions. I can distill it into two salient points. First, you must ask the right questions. Well of course, you say. That’s obvious. Yes, but the second point may not be quite so obvious: You must carefully avoid asking the wrong questions.

The majority of millennials surveyed were more likely to describe their current relationship with their boss as a friend, above other options such as Coach/Mentor, Knowledge-Source/Expert, Peer or Director/Allocator of Work.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that younger workers are seeking friendship with the boss. When asked “What is the ideal relationship you would like to have with your boss?” the American and British participants chose Coach/Mentor first. Knowledge Source/Expert was second. Friend was third.

When struggle is present, life is asking us to open the door to risk.

When we don’t allow risk in we allow fear to reside within us.

But if we live with the knowledge that risk is facing fear with courage, then when it comes knocking we can welcome it as a friend in spite of our fears.

When we close the door to risk we spend our life narrowing our perspective and we are diminishing our possibilities.

Anger is a normal emotion. Most people get angry if they have to deal with legitimately unpleasant or unfair situations and research shows it can even be useful when dealing with injustice.

The problem is when it tips into aggression or becomes habitual, resulting in chronic anger.

We have our work cut out for us when it comes to navigating complex problems, in large part because we are hard-wired to seek certainty as quickly as possible. The research of decision scientists reveals that our best strategy for tackling these problems is to harness cognitive diversity, because groups do better than individuals, including those with the highest IQs. Complex problems are characterized by confusing systems of causal interactions; untangling these requires multiple different points of view.
