What to Ask the Person in the Mirror (HBR) | Wipe off smudges on the glass ( iPEC's ELI Assessment)

Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

Life in all contexts is a reflection of one's self-image.  Asked what you think of someone's performance, and you respond through your self-image.  What is helpful is to discover where there is alignment and where there are gaps in perceptions.  One assessment tool is designed specifically to capture the subjective realities for leaders.  It's a valuable snapshot.  It's an opportunity to clear the smudges on the mirror.  It's a blueprint for influence and positive impact.

7 Traits of True Leaders | They Come From The Inside-Out

7 Traits of True Leaders | They Come From The Inside-Out | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
Control is a mirage. The most effective leaders right now--men and women--are those who embrace traits once considered feminine: Empathy. Vulnerability. Humility. Inclusiveness. Generosity. Balance. Patience.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

Like a book, the first sentence is key. "Control is a mirage."

I'm suggesting that you take away the labels (your preconceived ideas of what the words mean) and allow yourself to step into the experience of them. What we notice as these traits in others - and in ourselves - has come through an innate well-being and innate wisdom guiding action.    Rather than take on the traits of those from "Venus or Mars"; be the truth of who you are - we all are - at our core.  You may just start to see the human experience is always being created from the inside-out.  That's transformative leadership for all.

Will it be "win-win-win" when the talent comes back?

Will it be "win-win-win" when the talent comes back? | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
McKinsey is quietly recruiting female employees who left the consulting firm some years ago, presumably to start families, a signal that some companies are re-examining some of the most basic terms of women's working lives.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

When I read the excerpt below, I wonder what is truly intended.  Is the intention "we win first, and if you win too that's great," or "we both win, or we both lose."

"Anne-Marie Slaughter, a former U.S. State Department official ... said McKinsey's Mr. Barton has discussed a plan to win back talented women who "stepped off the track" years ago. "What Dominic Barton said to me was, 'These women were phenomenally smart, and we lost all that talent, and we're going to get it back,' " she said in a speech late last year."

Someone considering an offer to "come back" can take her time considering what it would mean this time around to be a "win."  You can create opportunities to ensure that what is next for you, your employer, your family is "win-win-win."  Let's hope this is what the firms are intending as well.

'Blue Monday' ? - Think "T.G.I... Monday" and bust the myth! | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
It is the most miserable day of the year, we are told, but is there any data to supports the claim?
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

I heard of the 3rd Monday in January as the "most depressing day" for the first time today.  Well, I didn't wake up feeling depressed.  What's this all about and who is perpetuating this myth?

There is power in words -  a seed gets planted.  For me, I don't intend to feed it anything for it to grow.  I choose to see the world the way I do - and I understand my world is a vibrational match to my consciousness.

Bust the myth for yourself by remembering nothing has meaning until you give it meaning.

Does Your Passion Match Your Aspiration?

Does Your Passion Match Your Aspiration? | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it

"Leaders who create extraordinary new possibilities are passionate about their mission and tenacious in pursuit of it. Many people have good ideas, but many fewer are willing to put themselves on the line for them.

Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

This is the point worth reading this article to read again: "A Passion test doesn't guarantee success, but without it, the journey can't even begin."

1. Do I feel strongly about the need for this?

2. Does the idea fit my long-held beliefs, values, and convictions?

3. Have I dreamed about something like this for a long time?

4. Do I think that this is vital for the future of people I care about?

5. Do I get excited when I think about it, and convey excitement when I talk about it?

6. Am I convinced that this can be accomplished?

7. Am I willing to put my credibility on the line to promise action on it?

8. Am I willing to spend time to sell it to others who might not understand or support it?

9. Can I make this the major focus of my activities?

10. Am I willing to devote personal time, above and beyond organizational time, to see that this happens?

11. Do I feel strongly enough to ignore negativity and fight for this?

12. Am I committed to seeing this through, over the long haul?

13. {Denise added} Do I feel connected to something bigger than myself, and feel humble enough to be its vehicle?

Social connections drive the 'upward spiral' of positive emotions and health

Social connections drive the 'upward spiral' of positive emotions and health | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
People who experience warmer, more upbeat emotions may have better physical health because they make more social connections, according to a new study.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

Dr. Barbara Fredrickson's research shows we can self-generate positive emotions and by doing so we become physically healthier.

As we talk about in Energy Leadership, catabolic thoughts trigger emotions and stress hormones in the body.  Too much, or too long and the system breaks down.  Research shows we can manage to produce for ourselves anabolic (positive) thoughts and emotions so the "good stuff" is in the system and this builds, heals, and helps us stay healthier.  This is also shown by results that people with higher "E-Factor" scores report more satisfaction, health, etc. in their lives.

Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

This really defines true "come from"  and "going in" motivation for any networking: "How can I help you?"

The uncomfortableness of the concept of networking is that we often think of doing it when we need something.

In my experience, if I feel resistance in a networking context, it shows me that my motivation is for me, not for what I enjoy most: help others expand on ideas and connect to others in order to collaborate in a value network.

Check out these insights and enjoy your experience of being a connector.
