Social connections drive the 'upward spiral' of positive emotions and health

Social connections drive the 'upward spiral' of positive emotions and health | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
People who experience warmer, more upbeat emotions may have better physical health because they make more social connections, according to a new study.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

Dr. Barbara Fredrickson's research shows we can self-generate positive emotions and by doing so we become physically healthier.

As we talk about in Energy Leadership, catabolic thoughts trigger emotions and stress hormones in the body.  Too much, or too long and the system breaks down.  Research shows we can manage to produce for ourselves anabolic (positive) thoughts and emotions so the "good stuff" is in the system and this builds, heals, and helps us stay healthier.  This is also shown by results that people with higher "E-Factor" scores report more satisfaction, health, etc. in their lives.

Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

This really defines true "come from"  and "going in" motivation for any networking: "How can I help you?"

The uncomfortableness of the concept of networking is that we often think of doing it when we need something.

In my experience, if I feel resistance in a networking context, it shows me that my motivation is for me, not for what I enjoy most: help others expand on ideas and connect to others in order to collaborate in a value network.

Check out these insights and enjoy your experience of being a connector.

Will it be "win-win-win" when the talent comes back?

Will it be "win-win-win" when the talent comes back? | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
McKinsey is quietly recruiting female employees who left the consulting firm some years ago, presumably to start families, a signal that some companies are re-examining some of the most basic terms of women's working lives.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

When I read the excerpt below, I wonder what is truly intended.  Is the intention "we win first, and if you win too that's great," or "we both win, or we both lose."

"Anne-Marie Slaughter, a former U.S. State Department official ... said McKinsey's Mr. Barton has discussed a plan to win back talented women who "stepped off the track" years ago. "What Dominic Barton said to me was, 'These women were phenomenally smart, and we lost all that talent, and we're going to get it back,' " she said in a speech late last year."

Someone considering an offer to "come back" can take her time considering what it would mean this time around to be a "win."  You can create opportunities to ensure that what is next for you, your employer, your family is "win-win-win."  Let's hope this is what the firms are intending as well.

It is the most miserable day of the year, we are told, but is there any data to supports the claim?
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

I heard of the 3rd Monday in January as the "most depressing day" for the first time today.  Well, I didn't wake up feeling depressed.  What's this all about and who is perpetuating this myth?

There is power in words -  a seed gets planted.  For me, I don't intend to feed it anything for it to grow.  I choose to see the world the way I do - and I understand my world is a vibrational match to my consciousness.

Bust the myth for yourself by remembering nothing has meaning until you give it meaning.

The Art of Loneliness | Practicing "Detached Involvement"

The Art of Loneliness | Practicing "Detached Involvement" | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
Humans experience joy in a multitude of ways, yet the varied forms of suffering—death, divorce, separation—return to one root principle: loss.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

In Energy Leadership, we talk about "detached involvement," as being fully engaged in the process without being attached to an outcome. On my path to higher conscious living and leading, I'm working on this. I can think to a number of times when I wanted something (or to be with someone) so much that I felt anxious in not knowing how things would work out. The fixation creates anxiety and sense of helplessness.  It is true, and I'm speaking from experience, you empower yourself when you let go of outcomes and be present in the process, in the moment without needing resolution.

Just think about this: "We really do not have a lot of days on this earth; every one we spend restless is one we could have spent enjoying being alive."

The Creative Benefits Of Exploring The Uncomfortable | Create New Pathways - Mind and Leadership | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it
At Grey New York, someone had the radical idea that to be creative, you need time to think creatively and not be at the mercy of relentless calendar invites. Our boss, Tor Myhren, agreed and instituted the Thursday Morning No-Meeting Zone from 9 a.m.
Denise Michelle Starrett's insight:

We often aspire to becoming competent in what we do, and that can offer a comfort zone in which to work. As one who has "taken the road less traveled" more than one, I agree with the author that there are benefits to getting outside the comfort zone.  It is in getting lost (in whatever way you choose to do it) that you create new paths.

Why “Multicultural Society” Is a Logical Impossibility | We evolve society integrating cultures | Big Think

Why “Multicultural Society” Is a Logical Impossibility | We evolve society integrating cultures | Big Think | Coach Leadership | Scoop.it

At first I disagreed with the author that we cannot have a multi-cultural society. And then I thought some more about what we get when multiple cultures make up a system (e.g. society). We evolve the system through the synthesis of the multiple cultures.

We all are parts of many cultures - self, family, community, company, nation. The systems to which we belong have norms, values, behaviors that identify them. We can choose to integrate or not into different systems; we may feel that we assimilate more or less into them depending on the time and energy we choose to commit.

I believe as we open our minds to crossing cultures, we evolve society to reconcile differences and see ways to synthesize those into a new whole. This is taking a higher conscious perspective, believing we are all connected in truth and we create separation.

As we open ourselves to understanding self and others, we start to reconcile paradoxes of cultural difference we encounter – how this is true AND this is true. As we do, our consciousness expands to hold both. We evolve; the systems evolve.
