Skype is a great tool to use in learning as it provides real time engagement with experts. This a great article with ideas about thinking outside of the box when integrating Skype.

Phil Hobrla's curator insight, March 16, 2015 8:04 PM

Microsoft recently showcased a new Skype feature that allows for real-time, two-way, voice translation! This feature will make the Skype Cultural Exchange even more extensible and will allow those who use Skype for non-native language acquisition to have in-depth conversations, in their own languages, about their progress and issues in their learning.

Henry Lee's curator insight, March 16, 2015 9:25 PM

Rescooped from Sarah Kozlowski. This make distance learning possible for virtual classrooms. While this setup up isn't ideal for a lot of virtual classroom setups, it can work as a low-tech solution.

Acclaim

“ Acclaim facilitates constructive, educational discussions and feedback around video content.”

John Dalziel's curator insight, February 1, 2015 10:30 AM

Acclaim is a web presence for practitioners facilitating discussion around video content.
It allows learners and practitioners to share questions, notes, and feedback by inserting time-specific comments that link to moments in each video.
Each comment is clickable, and once clicked, the video will jump to the specific moment that is being discussed.
Learners can see and respond to comments from their practitioner and peers at any time.
Users add videos to Acclaim in one of three different ways:
   - By embedding YouTube or Vimeo clips;
   - By uploading video files stored on a hard drive or mobile device; and/or
   - By using the built-in webcam feature to create and upload a video in real time.
Acclaim promotes learner engagement by encouraging discussion in a responsive and asynchronous format.
Using Acclaim as part of a flipped learning model, practitioners could...

   - assign video content for viewing as homework, and ask learners to share their thoughts and insights in the form of discussions with fellow classmates.
OR
   - in performance based-courses, such as dance, public speaking, and trial law, learners may record themselves using the webcam feature, and receive precise feedback from their practitioners and peers about areas of excellence, as well as points for improvement.
Acclaim hones critical thinking, listening, analytical and observational skills.
Acclaim also has built in privacy management, which can be reassuring to learners with anxiety about their performance or concerns about public critique.
Users can create secure folders based around course units and assignments, then grant access to specific learners or peers on a limited basis.
Visit this link to find out more, and/or request Instructor Access.

John Dalziel's curator insight, February 9, 2015 4:15 AM

Skaffl could provide a solution for practitioners who want a simple way to distribute and collect assignments without wading through a myriad of extra features that they won’t use.
Skaffl is a free iPad app that is designed to help practitioners...
   - distribute,
   - collect, and
   - grade assignments
...on their iPad.
On Skaffl practitioners can create 'classrooms' that their learners join through a class code.
Once a 'classroom' is created practitioners can distribute assignments and hand-outs to their learners.
Assignments can be created in the app or practitioners can attach items created outside of the Skaffl app.
Their learners can submit work through the app.
Practitioners can grade their learners’ assignments directly within the app.
Assignments that aren’t going to be graded (a rough draft of an essay, for example) can be annotated by practitioners to provide learners with ungraded feedback.
To sum up, with Skaffl
Practitioners can:
   - Create activities for students to complete
   - Plan ahead and save activities for distribution when you need them

   - Collect student work

   - Annotate and grade student assignments
Learners can:
   - Get their assignments and keep track of due dates
   - Hand in their assignments from other apps
   - Annotate and complete written assignments
   - Ask questions directly to their teachers using assignment comments

Via John Dalziel
more...
John Dalziel's curator insight, February 10, 2015 6:30 AM

Typeform takes a completely fresh approach to asking questions online and puts user experience and engagement at the forefront. Optimized to look stunning on all devices (desktop and mobile), Typeform is well worth exploring as your go-to tool for...
   - polling,
   - quizzing,
   - surveying
...and engaging...
   - learners,
   - staff
   - employers or
   - any other stakeholders.
Typeform isn't a dedicated assessment platform, but it's an ideal place to put together...
   - a short quiz,
   - a test or
   - a poll.
Users can style and design their questions in hundreds of innovative and fun ways as well as embed images and video to make your test informative as well as evaluative.
NOTE: With a Typeform account users can review the results of every form they've created in the application, and they can also have Typeform pass results into a Google Spreadsheet.
This offers a lot more portability of data for...
   - printing,
   - exporting or
   - simply collating for later use.
If practitioners are comfortable with their learners using their email to signup to Typeform, the tool can be of great value in many different areas of study.
Typeform can be used for research to poll or survey opinions and feedback. While it is easy to deliver forms digitally using social media or email, one more interactive way is to take advantage of the mobile interface and have students poll attendees in person using devices at events or in public.

Desmos Classroom Activities

John Dalziel's curator insight, January 28, 2015 3:56 AM

From the practitioner's perspective, I like Desmos activities because they are able to see their learners' progress as they go through the games and have a record of their activity.
If I were using them in my learning environment, I would probably have the "teacher's dashboard" on screen (or even projected) so that I (or everyone) can see who is making progress.
NOTE: Practitioners and learners don't HAVE to be in the same room all together. On-line practitioners can see multiple learners at the same time.
Overall, I think that Desmos is a tool that math practitioners should check out. I think their learners would enjoy them, too.

Activities can be viewed at...

   - ChromeOS (Chromebooks and Chromeboxes).
Screencastify can store their recordings on Google Drive, so they can access them from anywhere. This also helps to save local storage, especially on Chromebooks.
All Versions include:

“ Visit www.thematic.co to create your own free scrolling album to share with your friends.”
Via John Dalziel

John Dalziel's curator insight, February 7, 2015 2:49 AM

Thematic is designed for building and sharing visual stories, allowing users to display up to twenty pictures organized around a theme of their choosing.
After importing pictures users can add one line of text to each image in their story and rearrange the sequence in which their images appear on their screen.
The resulting story is displayed in a vertically scrolling format with each of the images occupying all of the available space within the browser.
Completed stories can be shared publicly or kept private.
Each public story can be shared via Twitter, Facebook, email, or embedding into a webpage.
I recommend importing high resolution images as smaller images will become pixelated when enlarged to Thematic's full size. After importing your pictures you can add text and rearrange the sequence in which your images appear on your screen.
