Twine - an open-source tool for telling interactive, non-linear stories

John Dalziel's curator insight, April 7, 2015 5:44 AM

Twine 2.0 can be used to tell interactive stories; it runs in a web browser, so practitioners, and/or learners can check out the on-line version or download it and run their own copy locally.
Twine is a user-friendly, open source tool for creating interactive, branching stories.
Twine can be used to create interactive, online lessons.
Historical or literary narrative can easily be transformed into an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure story.
Learners could learn by taking an active part in the narrative and making choices that impact their experience.
Every branching choice can lead learners down a different path, allowing them to experience a different story and learn new details with each play-through.

Gamification is an important method for making the learning of important but abstruse topics simple and interesting. Teachers often resort to gamification albeit unknowingly. Take for example the instance where the teacheri calls out to the student and asks him to demonstrate the concept on the green board. One could also consider the Mock Parliaments, and the Mock United Nations that take place in our schools; aren't they part of gamification?

Linda Buckmaster's curator insight, November 6, 2015 4:15 PM

Dr. Reshan Richards discusses the use of Explain Everything & iPads to build a Qualitative Formative Assessment Toolkit.  He has recently written about the qualitative formative assessment toolkit (QFAT for short) which is something that has come out of his research on and practice with mobile devices, multimedia, and formative assessment. It is comprised of four media authoring approaches available on most smartphones, tablets, and laptops: making photos, taking screenshots, filming videos, and screencasting.

Each of these approaches allow teachers and learner to capture and create moments of learning, excerpts of understanding, and reflections of experience.

John Dalziel's curator insight, February 20, 2015 3:09 AM

AudioPal, a free service, offers three way to create short audio messages to embed in any web presence.
Users can...
   - record using the microphone connected to their computer;
   - record by calling AudioPal's phone system; or
   - create a message by using AudioPal's text-to-speech function.
AudioPal has many potential uses within education but does require users enter an email address in order to access the embed code and sharing links.

If learners don't have email accounts, practitioners could set-up a classroom Gmail account that all learners enter.

All of the AudioPal messages that their learners create would then go to that one email account that they manage.

Clyp.it is one of easiest-to-use audio recording tools that I've tried.

To record on Clyp.it users simply go to the website and click the big record button (they may have to allow pop-ups in their browser in order for Clyp.it to access their microphone).

When they've done recording, they click the share button and are taken to a page on which they can download their recording or grab an embed code to post the recording within a web presence.
Clyp.it is also available to use as a free iOS app or as a free Android app.
