Most Patients Want to Self-Manage Healthcare Online | Accenture

The vast majority of patients (90 percent) want to self-manage their healthcare leveraging technology, such as accessing medical information, refilling prescriptions and booking appointments online, but nearly half (46 percent) are unaware if their health records are available electronically, according to a new survey by Accenture (NYSE:ACN), which was released today at the America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) annual meeting.

Automated Security Alert has released an educational videoon YouTube as part of their mission to use social media to educate the public about their health care options. The Munhall-based company put the video together in response to handwritten letters that they got from clients and the family members of clients who have had positive experiences with the company, ranging from lifesaving help to peace of mind. While similar video testimonies from other companies involve paid actors, the people in the Automated Security Alert video are the actual clients who shared their experiences with the company who in turn asked if they would volunteer to be in the video, and they agreed.

Losing weight is really hard. And in North Carolina, we are struggling with a state-wide obesity epidemic. Consider this: two-thirds of North Carolinians are overweight or obese. In the last two decades, obesity rates have doubled across the state – an increase of 1.9 million adults, or the equivalent of filling the Carolina Panthers stadium 26 times.

One in three children between the ages of 10-17 in our state struggles with weight. They have a 70 percent chance of remaining overweight or obese as adults. Less than half of adults and only a quarter of high school students in North Carolina get the recommended amount of daily exercise. And it’s more likely that you will drink a sugar sweetened beverage today than consume the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables.
