In probably the most interesting of the reactions to Instagram's introduction of video that I've seen so far (and there have been millions in the last 24 hours), Jeremy Goldman makes a point that I don't think anyone has actually acknowledged yet: there might be room for both Instagram and Vine to coexist.


Some of Jeremy's points:

-Vine is 6 seconds, Instagram is 15.

-Instagram contains a seamless integration of video and photo - the product/network is actually a different type of place.


And my personal favorite:

-Many comparisons can be made between Facebook and Twitter, but I can probably count on my fingers how many people are using one instead of the other. Remember when Twitter was considered "just Facebook statuses?" Look what happened there.


Maybe Vine and Instagram can both succeed, maybe neither will. What do you think?

You know how they say "if you're not on social you don't exist?" Well, a similar concept can - and should - be applied to mobile. If your website isn't mobile optimized, it may still exist, but it's going to cause frustration for a large percentage of your readers. Smartphone usage is off the charts with the increasing amount of people converting ( who actually has a non-internet cellphone anymore? ) and consuming content on the go. With these steps, you're on your way to a great mobile site.

Almost half of all adult Facebook users said that they “never” get news on the social network, which amounts to 30% of the adult U.S. population.

Most of those who find news on Facebook are not actively seeking it, according to the study data. Rather, some 78% said that it happened inadvertently -- they were on Facebook for another reason, and a news tidbit just happened to be featured in their newsfeed. Only 22% said they were actively looking for news on their newsfeeds.

Those who consume news on Facebook tend to be younger, the same age group that is much less likely to be engaged with news on other platforms.

The study also found that news consumption on Facebook did not replace other news-consumption activities.

I love these pompous graphics images. When you have to scroll, you know their are important. Consumer behavior has always been key. At least for the marketers.

 

Newspapers saw early social media as a threat. Now they need to be friends with monsters like Facebook. Content is king. Distribution is everything. If you are a newspaper. Probably consumer behavior (and consumtion particulary) should be on top of every newspaper agenda.

Here's a great tweet skeleton with some useful advice from Gerry Moran.


Something I'd add to the "Format" section: Decide on what format you're going to use based upon your goals. For me, using facts/stats is great for RTs while using headlines (with a little hint of mystery) is optimal for clicks.


Another tip I'd add is to change up the structure every so often and put the link in the middle of your message (or two micromessages). Per [SEO]Moz's Rand Fishkin, tweets with between text tend to get higher click throughs.

I am not a big Tweeter, but this was helpful.  I would add have separate types of Tweets for different outcomes:  1. clear information for Re-Tweets 2. Tantalizing headlines for clicks.  And, mix up where you put your links.  -Ken

Dead In The Water
Dead in the water indeed since your competitors are out there creating wiht social media, learning what works and building a following. Good luck catching up fast.

NOTHING happens all that fast in social media. You can create great campaigns that boost your social media 10x, but natural growth is SLOW and STEADY.

This means your social media strategy will need to DISRUPT to win and create trust at the same time. Those two ideas can be mutually exclusive so make sure to JUMP IN NOW or double your efforts now.

Rememer if you are not the lead sleddog the view is always the same :).
