While SEO experts keep saying that "search engine optimization" is not dead, it's only changing, I am quite happy to see that more and more of the SEO techniques that have been promoted as the "smart" way to make anyone web site more visible, are finally crumbling down one by one.

In this excellent article, Neil Patel, identifies five of them, that carry more big risks than benefits for anyone web publisher still adopting them. These are:

1) Guest Blogging (spammy kind)

2) Incoming Links with Optimized Anchor Text

3) Low quality inbound links

4) Using lots of relevant keywords inside your content

5) Relying more on building inbound links than on creating high-value content

Excellent recommendations for anyone publishing online. It's time for those who have quality ideas and content to regain their due value and visibility, stolen for so long by those who, without either one, invested fanatically in content marketing and search engine optimizing without ever creating real value.

Useful. Informative. 8/10

How Social Media Impacts SEO and Site Ranking: infographic

How Social Media Impacts SEO and Site Ranking: infographic | COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT - CM2 | Scoop.it

Search engine optimization has not been dependent on a minimal number of factors for a long time now, such as number of times a keyword appeared on a page, and it continues to become a more complex web of on and off-page factors every month. One of the more recent factors that has had an impact on search ranking is social media.

This infographic breaks down ways that social media influences the visibility of your website in search results, including:

  • Social media can help search engines find and index your content faster
  •  Likes, shares, retweets, etc. indicates to search engine that content is new and interesting, often leading to a temporary increase in rankings
  • Your content will increase in search results for people connected to you
  • Increases domain authority and the number of inbound links to your website

Venkatesh - if I am able I give my site as much media support as I can. As a social media trainer I need to 'try out' media before I can teach others to use it and give an insight into which is useful and which is not. So I tend to put my site and what I am doing out on the various social media platforms at least twice a day - I don't over emphasise my site because that can be counter productive (people switch off if all they see from you is self-promotion) and so it is keeping your presence alive but not switching off potential clients by constant ME, ME, ME. I perform both SEO services and social media training for others (see - just a bit of self promotion LOL)

This infographic is a great way to depict many of the articles I've previously pointed out that cover SEO and social media. It is almost easier to explain the relationship in an image format, especially for those who don't have a background in SEO.

There are many other factors that go into how much social media truly affects SEO, so there is more to be explained after this. But this is a great introductory image. It also emphasizes the speed with which social media makes an impact.

What Changes With Google Hummingbird Are Not The SERP Results But How Google Interprets Your Search

Excellent article by Ammon Johns explaining clearly what the new Google algorithm Hummingbird does and how it really affects the world of search.

Contrary to what has been written by many, Hummingbird changes deeply how Google interprets search queries, especially, long, detailed ones, not the search results directly. This is also why no-one has really seen major changes to web site traffic after Google has introduced the new algo quietly in August.

In simple words, what Google Hummingbird does, in the words of Ammon Johns is: "...making the very concept of many long-tail searches go the same way as referral data.

Google is trying to get away from exact wording to understanding the concepts.

So no matter how verbose or roundabout your search for pizza restaurant in Denver may be, the search it runs is exactly the same as “Denver Pizza Restaurant”, “Pizza Restaurant Denver”, etc."

Read the full article and the examples provided and you will get a good gist of it.

Very interesting. Useful. 8/10

Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, May 2, 2013 12:52 PM
Great comment MizWalidah. I wold modify one point. Instead of "continually optimizing your meta keywords and tags" I would find ways to ping in fresh content such as User Generated Content from reviews or comments. Once a website I've SEOed is inside of Google's algorithm changing meta values that matter (mostly the page's title) can HURT SEO. I change titles VERY VERY carefully since the first rule of SEO is DO NO DAMAGE. The QDF (Quality Deserves Freshness) movement post Panda and Penguin LOVES it when a page pings, so I love the 1% of visitors who are willing to comment, review or otherwise contribute User Generated Content.

I DON'T play with meta nearly as much as you imply since to do so can look SPAMMY and cause real harm. The most important idea is creating content other people want to share. This is why I love GAMES and CONTESTS especially for bands. High engagement content such as Contests and Games can help with SEO and they can help create a distinct brand all bands need. Appreciate your enthusiasm, but be careful about meta (especially title) changes. Marty
