As a proud Northerner living in the South, this sort of article makes me both happy and sad. Sad, from an economic perspective, in that it has adverse implications for labour mobility, for the distribution of wealth and for key sector workers. Happy, to have the best of both worlds.

 

I'm always amazed when colleagues/friends from the South venture North and realise (a) how much property they could buy in the North (b) how pretty it is (c) how people actually speak to them in the street.

 

Of course, the average Southerner also thinks that having a house that's worth more makes them better people too. My only response is if you want to live in Basingstoke/Slough/Croydon and think that you are in anyway better off than the citizens of York/Chester/Haydon Bridge, you're welcome to.

 

But you'd be wrong...
