Netflix Releases Free Infrastructure Failure Testing Software "Chaos Monkey" To Public - Forbes

Netflix Releases Free Infrastructure Failure Testing Software "Chaos Monkey" To Public - Forbes | Cloud Technologies for Business | Scoop.it
Netflix has announced that it has released its "Chaos Monkey" infrastructure testing software under a free Open Source Apache license.
Jim Wheeler's insight:

This is a great idea as long as the lessons that come from the exercise are learnt. Every company needs a Chaos Monkey whether or not they have virtualised or cloud infrastructure. Thinking about it, most companies I have worked at do have at least one in human form!

GigaOm white paper - Metered IT: the path to utility computing |

GigaOm white paper - Metered IT: the path to utility computing |  | Cloud Technologies for Business | Scoop.it
The pervasive notion that computing has become a utility is compelling. But what are the characteristics of a “utility,” and can we see them in today’s computing models?
Jim Wheeler's insight:

What is a utility? Can we begin to treat cloud computing as a true commodity like coal or oil? How would we measure it? If you can answer these questions, CFO's will love you. Imagine being able to budget for your cloud computing resources before your project starts, and fix a price there and then by buying a futures contract. Interesting.

What is a Cloud Broker-Dealer? - Blog - Cloud Computing is the next Commodity - and is already traded as such

What is a Cloud Broker-Dealer? - Blog - Cloud Computing is the next Commodity - and is already traded as such | Cloud Technologies for Business | Scoop.it

Presentation at CloudCon Expo in San Francisco on 2nd October 2012

Jim Wheeler's insight:

This is the first time that I have thought about cloud computing in this way. But it makes sense that logically, you should be able to trade it just like any other commodity. The key will be finding and agreeing upon the universal measurement for cloud computing usage, just like gas is traded in mmBtu. There are some companies working on this  - 6fusion http://www.6fusion.com/ is a good place to start.

I can see the appeal to CFOs with being able to hedge their risks when it comes to funding technology projects. Strategic-Blue will be an interesting company to watch, as will their other venture, CloudMediaHub.

Private cloud does not bring full benefits of cloud computing, says AWS

Private cloud does not bring full benefits of cloud computing, says AWS | Cloud Technologies for Business | Scoop.it
Amazon Web Services (AWS) senior vice-president Andy Jassy slams private cloud suppliers for failing to deliver the benefits of cloud computing
Jim Wheeler's insight:

The benefits of Public cloud versus Private cloud according to Andy Jassy. If you are a SaaS startup, think very carefully about building your own cloud before you proceed. If you are lucky enough to be inundated with as many customers as Playfish were, you would be well advised to consider  a service like AWS that can handle the scale up of capacity that would be required.
