Certainly, there are times when a native app is going to deliver the best, most productive user experience.
Riptide Software's insight:

We posted an article a couple days ago on the rise in native app usage over mobile web.  While acknowledging that there are some powerful advantages to native apps, we also emphasized that this trend doesn't mean you should write off responsive sites or web-based apps.

This article gives an example of a great case for a mobile web solution over native app development.  The author make the same point we do - the most important factors in deciding native vs. web-based is to knowing what your target audience needs and the most effective way to give it to them.

Google’s brilliant plan to get millions to adopt its e-money system: Gmail

Google’s brilliant plan to get millions to adopt its e-money system: Gmail | Cloud Development | Scoop.it
In May 2013, Google soft-launched a straightforward scheme for sending money to other people. It lets you connect Gmail with a Google Wallet account and send money to a friend for free (from a linked bank account) or for a small fee (from a credit card). While the service has been available since last summer to...

Richard Platt's curator insight, May 31, 2014 5:12 PM

The long term play here for both Google and Apple is obvious. First you get users to hand you a link to your credit card or bank account. Then you start multiplying the ways they can use your software and hardware to pay for things and send money. If either company can make even a tiny margin on those transactions, they can tap a whole new revenue stream. And they’ll then be in position to do what Square and others have been trying to do—take a bite out of the entire global credit-card payments system, with its trillions of dollars in annual transactions.- Maybe

The Mobile Web Is Dead, It's All About Apps

The Mobile Web Is Dead, It's All About Apps | Cloud Development | Scoop.it
Everyone is freaking out about this chart from...
Riptide Software's insight:

Mobile users are spending more time in apps than mobile browsers. Does this mean responsive web sites will become obsolete?  Probably not.  What matters is knowing your audience.

The majority of app usage is social media and gaming. If that's not your market, delivering via mobile browser lets you reach a wider audience with significantly less development. There are plenty of successful web apps.

On the other hand, if your focus is social media, gaming, or productivity tools then may be worth the investment in native app development.
