Cloud Conscious
The rise of Cloud computing has the potential to be among the most transformative developments in the world of information technology in the last 20 years. To date, Cloud computing is already having a significant impact on the way technology vendors are service-enabling and delivering applications, how CIOs think about infrastructure and datacenter optimization, how vendors are building platform based BPO and other high-level service offerings, and how CIOs approach building and deploying custom applications and objects via Cloud-based platforms and services.

Rethinking Ray Ozzie | Cloud content from Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows

Rethinking Ray Ozzie | Cloud content from Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows | Cloud Conscious | Scoop.it
Arvindra Sehmi's insight:

"I doubt those memos were the work of Ozzie alone. There's an army of technical fellows, Gates himself and other influentials, including Ballmer who would have given the go-ahead for the memos to be released (and leaked). Microsoft's problem was committing to the vision and executing the strategy. It takes a huge number of things to come together and so much time to turn a ship the size of Microsoft on a dime." - Vin

Forget Big Data, Think Mid Data | OdinText Blog

Forget Big Data, Think Mid Data | OdinText Blog | Cloud Conscious | Scoop.it
After attending the American Marketing Association’s first conference on Big Data this week, I’m even more convinced of what I already suspected from speaking to hundreds of Fortune 1000 marketers the last couple of years.
Arvindra Sehmi's insight:

This chart pretty much nails it for me and captures my own experience. There are relatively few companies that can afford to do 'real big-data' affordably or with the right ROI in terms of investment $$$ and insight value. I do think there's another dimension however, and that's to do with leveraging 'big-data' technologies to improve the way one does 'small/mid-data' processing and BI. I think the whole NoSQL, Hadoop, etc. movements have some really good ideas that can be applied to further improve the ROI of 'small/mid-data' solutions. Now that these technologies are easily accessible in Azure, Amazon, Google, Rackspace, Mongo, etc. clouds, even the usual barriers to new technology adoption have been lowered. - Vin

7 Inspiring Examples of Real-Time Marketing in Action

7 Inspiring Examples of Real-Time Marketing in Action | Cloud Conscious | Scoop.it

Having been CTO at Onalytica Ltd. this is a subject of interest to me. In the context of the cloud what does it mean? Well obvious really, it's about "listening to the voices in the cloud (i.e. online) using cloud-based listening services, and rsponding with appropriate actions in the most relevant channels as quickly as possible... approching real time." As long as one can crunch the firehose of data fast enough and extract insights your response can also be quick. "Realtime" is the end-to-end time of the cycle of crunching+insight extraction+action performance. -- Vin

Asana: the Modern Way to Work Together

Asana: the Modern Way to Work Together | Cloud Conscious | Scoop.it

It has a lovely symmetry about it when you're using the cloud to build in the cloud. Asana is one of the best cloud apps my team has started using recently; we also use Google Groups, Google Docs, Windows Azure, Skype, Dropbox, and Dia Diagram Editor. All of these are free, or free trial in the case of Azure. And I've never clicked an Ad link or banner yet. Mind boggles. - Vin

Orchard Project

Orchard Project | Cloud Conscious | Scoop.it

We're building a new Website, CMS and Blog for a client and decided to use Orchard. The architecture of this framework is highly modular and it looks like we can get up-to-speed really fast. We're also going to add (Java) Solr/Lucene search functionality and Orchard's extensibility should make that pretty easy. You can get Orchard out-of-the-box in Windows Azure... which at this moment happens to be offering 90-day free trials of their Cloud. (Note: Orchard itself is free open source and available for download on CodePlex or can be installed with the Microsoft Web Platform Installer.) - Vin

"Orchard project is focused on delivering a .NET-based CMS application that will allow users to rapidly create content-driven Websites, and an extensibility framework that will allow developers and customizers to provide additional functionality through modules and themes."

Windows Azure Active Directory Cartoon - Plankytronixx - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Arvindra Sehmi's insight:

This is a nice overview of all the moving parts in Windows Azure Active Directory (WAAD).

At my company (Oxford Economics Ltd.) as we build our cloud services, we're finding that architecting our solutions with claims-based authentication in mind and using a cloud-hosted STS is proving very useful indeed. We're able to provide a seamless experience to customers across all our web properties and services. Security authentication and authorisation just gets out of the way! - Vin

P.S. We built our own STS using Thinktecture's awesome free Identity Server over on GitHub. If we require scale and federation with other parties via ADFS then we could move over to WAAD.

Why Microsoft’s purchase of Yammer is the smartest deal of the year

Why Microsoft’s purchase of Yammer is the smartest deal of the year | Cloud Conscious | Scoop.it

This is great news as it gives more momentum to "The Social Enterprise" trend that happens to be Salesforce.com's mantra. But Benihoff is probably fuming because he was trying to own the space and is spending so much to do so (60%+ of revenues, even though growth is 30%-40%). It's a land grab and MS has just carved out a massive moat for itself. MS will probably integrate Yammer with Lync, Skype, Outlook, Office, SharePoint, Office365 and all its other server products. -Vin

P.S. And what a perfect complement it'll be to the high-end (just-announced) Surface Tablet which is clearly targeting power-users and enterprises! So with one move MSFT takes a stab at both SFDC and Apple (and Oracle). I'd say they think that's easily worth $1bn in change.

"That didn't take long. It's less than 24 hours after the news broke, and critics have already come out of the woodwork to denounce Microsoft's $1.2 billion acquisition of enterprise social networking platform Yammer."
