Mobile Eats the Cloud | Memkite | Cloud computing | Scoop.it
Smart take on how "fog computing" has manifested in mobile phones - "Mobile eats the cloud" http://t.co/HFeGLAGcnU
Irena Damianou's insight:

Although mobile on-device storage is currently strongly neglected compared to cloud storage, this is perhaps the most exciting and enabling field for innovation. As a result, given the tremendous increase in processing power and low-latency storage capacity of mobile devices, a lot of processing is likely to happen on device instead of in the cloud and this is only the beginning.

Making Cloud-Computing Systems More Efficient

Making Cloud-Computing Systems More Efficient | Cloud computing | Scoop.it
People aren’t the only things that are predictable — so are the computer programs they write. A team of researchers at Stanford says predictability can be used to make large-scale systems work three times more efficiently by removing the human guesswork about computing resources from the system.
Irena Damianou's insight:

The ever-ending problem with efficiency is highlighted in this article, where it is supported but he author that even virtualized machines sometimes end up working only at 20% of actual capacity. With the creation and use of the right program- which is what is outlined in this paper-entire data centers could be made to run at 70 to 75 percent of capacity. This new program, called Quasar, is a huge step forward for the industry, critics say.

The cloud skills gap is getting wider, argues Interoute exec | Cloud computing | Scoop.it
“Anyone starting a company right now would have to be completely bonkers to build their own infrastructure,” roars Interoute chief technical officer Matthew Finnie.
Irena Damianou's insight:

A debate about why cloud computing is not in fact, growing as expected, even if it is considered to be "the most valuable IT job skill to have." The criticism is no other than this skills gap in the industry, which is in fact getting wider instead of smaller. Either way, there’s plenty of evidence that the "cloud" is the new thing, and being a have, rather than a have-not, is more important than ever from now on.

Green IT: Does it still matter?

Green IT: Does it still matter? | Cloud computing | Scoop.it
Five years ago, you couldn’t move for ‘green’ claims from businesses.
Irena Damianou's insight:

A relatively new well-intentioned topic which is brought back to surface due to this uprising of cloud computing is Green IT. Although extremely important due to the scare resources in this world and the harming of the environment, it is unclear if it's getting the right attention. Environmental policies seem to be moved to the archives, and environmental commitments fall from the board agenda which all is causing a huge debate. And this is where cloud computing revolutionises the Green IT sector, which is what this article is all about and how cloud technologies can be used in line with an organisation's operations to not only enhance and promote Green IT, but also to provide good and simple solutions for companies to implement; Going green is everyone's duty.
