Cloud computing trend alert: Expect growing focus on enterprises

In this expert answer, contributor Chris Moyer looks at a key cloud computing trend -- enterprise migration -- and touches on other cloud trends as well.
VendorFit's insight:

Large companies have the most to gain for migration to cloud computing.  Cloud computing can help enterprises safeguard their data, preserving millions of records and allowing for processor-intensive analytics that would otherwise be impossible.  However, there are plenty of reasons for reluctance in massive corporations.  For one, large companies usually have invested a great deal of capital in building out data centers, and organizational momentum will prevent a swift change from existing (functional) systems to cloud-systems that might provide only marginal benefits.

How cloud computing is transforming problem solving

How cloud computing is transforming problem solving | Cloud Computing and Mangement | Scoop.it
Endless possibilities of cloud technology is enabling designers to imagine, create and design a better world for the future, says Pete Baxter (Cloud Computing: How cloud computing is transforming problem solving - The Guardian (blog)
VendorFit's insight:

For anyone outside of the IT community, cloud computing seems to promise only intangible results.  The Guardian claims that cloud computing might actually be the technology that leads to a better world, with increased distributed computing power and networked devices creating a competely new ecosystem for business.  While many of the Guardian's insights are useful, there are other areas where Cloud Computing can pay dividents in the future.  For example, Carbon Monoxide sensors could be repurposed to "air quality" sensors that could output real-time air quality data to create national maps of industrial pollution and air quality fluctuations, allowing for faster responses to critical environmental problems.

VendorFit's insight:

According to this recent report, governments around the world are moving into the cloud at a rapid pace to reduce costs, increase performance, and protect data from loss.  While the United States initiated the movement into cloud computing, Asia is going to be the fastest growing market for these services throughout the next decade.  Businesses that market to governmental agencies should pursue global expansion to continue their growth, as many emerging markets will require solutions that are tailored to their smaller scale, lower budgets, and conservative approach towards technological adoption.

Cloud Hosting Services Can Help Businesses ... - Computer Blog

Part of what makes cloud-based systems desirable for enterprises is that they provide the advantages of a hosted infrastructure without the cost of additional hardware.
VendorFit's insight:

Ever since the early days of SaaS development, cloud computing has been the gold standard for enterprise-level businesses.  Cloud computing increases data security, availability across platforms, and it cuts down on the initial costs of information technology.  Virtual Private Data Centers allow for more flexible scaling of cloud computing services, avoiding the obsolescence gap that plagues traditional data centers.  VPDCs are also more developer-friendly because they allow much more rapid prototyping, testing, and bugfixing.  In the modern business environment, there is little justification for keeping a costly information technology department unless one's industry has special requirements (classified servers, HIPPA compliance, etc.)

Cloud computing 2014: Moving to a zero-trust security model

Cloud computing 2014: Moving to a zero-trust security model | Cloud Computing and Mangement | Scoop.it
Snowden leaks aren't driving companies away from the cloud; but the disclosures have made them a lot more careful (Cloud computing 2014: Moving to a zero-trust security model http://t.co/5q9iPzmFhg)...
VendorFit's insight:

When Edward Snowden leaked information about the NSA's compromise of ISP and Cloud Data security, many companies responded by overhauling their security protocols.  Google immediatley boosted server-side encryption of search traffic and data (the primary reason for the drop-off in Google Analytics usefulness) and Microsoft increased encryption for Office and Outlook.  Companies that do a great deal of business on the "cloud" should utilize key-management solutions that provide ownership of encryption keys to the individual users during data transit, preventing the compromise of the encryption keys by the NSA.
