Investors Drop Big Money On Dropbox So It Can Beat Box

Investors Drop Big Money On Dropbox So It Can Beat Box | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

Dropbox is raising between $250 million to $400 million at a $10 billion valuation according to the Wall Street Journal and Re/Code. Why? Because

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

It will be interesting to see how the storage market will develop once the cloud is an established part of every day computing. Dropbox and Box are no strangers to this industry and are arguably as entrenched as the larger more traditional players. That said there are plenty of other players vying to take a piece of this pie. Mega, 4Sync and SugarSync are 3 that quickly come to mind but there are others. The world of cloud computing post-NSA's spying scandal is going to be about security and those companies that offer the safest option are the ones that are most likely to succed (or perhaps even become targets of a taken over).

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

Cloud storage already has, possibly, too many players. With all of the big players (Google, Microsoft, Amazon etc) positioning themselves to grab a piece of this pie, these more traditional cloud storage companies must become more specialised if they are to survive.

Cloud Storage Service SugarSync Abandons Freemium For A Paid Account Model

Cloud Storage Service SugarSync Abandons Freemium For A Paid Account Model | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

SugarSync, a gladiator in the long, hard battle that is hosted cloud storage, has decided to go mercenary. The company announced today that they will offer a “paid-only” service model, doing away with their free storage tiers.

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

Although it appears to be a rather brave move on SugarSync's part to abandon Freemium so early on, the company believes that it did not make financial sense to continue to offer it. Especially in view of their already existing paid customer base.

10 file-sharing options: Dropbox, Google Drive, and more

10 file-sharing options: Dropbox, Google Drive, and more | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
Sharing files with one or more colleagues can still be a hassle.

Remember the first time you tried to send a 4GB video file as an email attachment? Anybody who has tried to share a large file with a friend or colleague understands all too well to the problems that are involved. Email attachments can get rejected, especially if you don't know what the upper limit on a file size is for sender or recipient. Uploads and downloads can be arbitrarily slow. And the clunkiness of the whole process makes it hard to get real work done.

In the bad old days, if you wanted to distribute files that were too hefty for your email to handle, you had few choices. You could buy some Web-hosting space and use that to distribute files on the fly to your coworkers and collaborators, you could burn a disc or copy the file to a USB drive and drop that in an envelope, or you could use that fabled legacy transport protocol, Sneakernet. Nowadays, however, there's a bevy of free services that offer tons of storage and bandwidth.
