Maybe big data is the killer app for Google's cloud

Maybe big data is the killer app for Google's cloud | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
Hadoop is popular and so is cloud computing, so it comes as no surprise that a battle would break out to establish the best place for running Hadoop. Lately, Google has been scoring some victories on the user side.
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

But none of this is empirical evidence that Compute Engine is, indeed, a better place to run big data workloads than is AWS or, for that matter, any other cloud.

A quick reminder of why cloud computing really matters -- the applications

A quick reminder of why cloud computing really matters -- the applications | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
Amazon Web Services’ second-annual user conference is around the corner, but its scale is as much about AWS’s platform as it is about the ecosystem of developers and applications it has enabled.
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

AWS deserves a lot of credit for building a generally great computing platform, but its real success came via its ability to appeal to developers.

Cloud Computing, Legacy Vendors And The Only Reality That Matters

Cloud Computing, Legacy Vendors And The Only Reality That Matters | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
The cloud community had a chuckle this morning at an interview in which Saar Gillai, SVP of converged cloud at Hewlett-Packard suggested that organizations should be careful of using Amazon Web Services (AWS) since it's a "legacy cloud." Now apart...
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

.... Is AWS legacy? Absolutely not, it’s out-innovating all comers in most directions. Is HP’s cloud a dead duck with no chance for success? Absolutely not, it’s got a solid value proposition and story to tell, and this story doesn’t (or shouldn’t) include calling the competitors “legacy”....

A Sneak Peek at the Next Wave in Cloud Computing

A Sneak Peek at the Next Wave in Cloud Computing | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
The world of cloud computing is a complicated place. But Lucas Carlson boils it down to simple analogy: Amazon is the Apple of cloud computing.
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

It’s a common complaint, and — more than a half decade after the debut of Amazon’s seminal web services, known as EC2 and S3 — so many companies are striving to build what they see as an open source version of these services, a version that any other cloud outfit can not only use but modify.

Why Amazon Web Services rules the cloud

Why Amazon Web Services rules the cloud | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
The company that originated cloud computing continues to hold a staggering lead over the IaaS competition -- and the consumerization of IT has played right into its hands
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

Amazon.com has long been the dominant e-commerce operation. In a similar, all-inclusive way, AWS rules the cloud by offering every service imaginable and building out very aggressively. It's tough to imagine what might seriously challenge that reign.

Amazon's AWS Cloud Is A Serious Threat To Traditional Enterprise Computing Companies

Amazon's AWS Cloud Is A Serious Threat To Traditional Enterprise Computing Companies | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
An interesting little report here about how Amazon's AWS cloud computing services are a serious threat to a certain segment of the enterprise computing market.
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

AWS is a good bundle but what is at stake here is that it involves replacing old and trusted procedures. On the other hand, businesses that have been around for a long time have learnt to rely on the guidance of their IT department. Therefore, in the end, this becomes a matter of whether the IT department will or will not relinquish control to another entity.
