Sunnier Days Ahead for Retailers that Use Cloud Computing | Innovation Insights | Wired.com | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
Image: Patrick Hoesly/Flickr Brick-and-mortar retailers have long favored highly visible investments, such as advertising or store design over spending
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

Not all that surprising! "The result is that retailers use only about 10% to 15% of the computer capacity in their data centers. Some 85% is sitting idle at any time. Huge economies of scale could be gained by using the same infrastructure across multiple applications in a cloud-computing architecture."

Cloud still far from the norm

Cloud still far from the norm | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

A recent survey by analyst company Ovum found 74 per cent of IT activities within organisations are still performed by an in-house IT facility. Indeed, only 4 per cent of IT activities currently make use of cloud resources.

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

To be quite honest, the results are hardly surprising. Although the media keep on harping that all is well in the cloud, it is simply not true. Besides the bad press that is generated every time a major service suffers downtime, security remains a major concern. Until these concerns are addressed adoption will be gradual.

Achieving five 9s reliability has been an important concept in telecommunications and computing for a long time. Literally, “five 9s” is defined as your computing infrastructure working 99.999% of the time (which means the maximum downtime in a year is no more than 5 minutes and 15.36 seconds annually, or slightly longer in a leap year).

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

Trust it! Why not? With a cloud service there is certainly less internal politics. Especially in smaller companies (SMBs) IT departments can be a bit too intrusive, or let me change that, feel like they can be.

Everyone seems to want to take advantage of cloud computing these days, but few people actually take the time to think about the risks that come along with this kind of service. To manage cloud security risks, you have to know which risks in the cloud actually pose a threat to your business. Different types of clouds environments will come with different problems, so you need to learn about your cloud service to be able to realize what could go wrong if you are not careful at all times.

End-to-end approach critical to securing cloud computing | ITWeb | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
Cloud computing is predicted to be the future of the technology world, and analyst reports abound on the expected growth of the uptake of these solutions. However, security issues remain one of the dominant barriers with the adoption of cloud solutions. Many organisations are hesitant to migrate to the cloud in light of the ever-increasing number of attacks on cloud-based solutions, as well as the risk of downtime caused by natural disasters and other issues in the regions where cloud data is stored.

Very informative infographic. Quickly, for those who are wondering "Enterprise information management combines business intelligence (BI) and enterprise content management (ECM). Enterprise information management takes these two approaches to managing information one step further, in that it approaches information management from an enterprise perspective. Where BI and ECM respectively manage structured and unstructured information, EIM does not make this "technical" distinction." courtesy Wikipedia

INFOGRAPHIC: Cloud Security Adoption

INFOGRAPHIC: Cloud Security Adoption | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

Security is a real issue even though it is true that cloud computing is just as safe as traditional systems when it comes to apparent vulnerabilities and security holes. This is because of the nature of cloud computing, the public cloud, there are a lot more people with proximity access to the data. What I mean is that compared to an in-house system where there is virtually no connection to the outside internet, the whole world will now be potentially be able to just walk up to your door, so to speak, in public cloud systems.
