Corporate lobbyists, news organisations and academics have joined forces with Microsoft in the software company’s legal battle with the U.S. government over access to customer data stored overseas.

The diverse set of interests filed briefs with a federal appeals court in New York, urging it to reverse a judge’s order that Microsoft turn over emails from a data centre in Ireland. They argued that turning them over would jeopardise the future of international cloud computing.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released its final version of the U.S. government Cloud Computing Technology Roadmap, Volumes I and II last week. The roadmap provides international guidelines, objectives and “Priority Action Plans” for cloud computing, with the hope of improving cybersecurity for the United States' critical infrastructure and individual organizations.

Some argue no – a shifting market of which vendors have invested more than $15 billion in will define what cloud computing is to become more so than a roadmap.

Apple has reached an out-of-court settlement and will potentially pay millions in damages to lay an antitrust lawsuit regarding ebook price fixing to rest.

By reaching a settlement outside of court, Apple is avoiding the trial, scheduled for July 14, in which the iPad and iPhone maker faced over $840 million in potential damages.
