Three quarters of businesses in the financial sector are still concerned about adopting cloud-based applications, according to survey data from the NCC Group.

Two in five (40%) respondents aren’t currently using cloud because they fear sudden data loss on a mass scale, while three quarters (74%) of firms would need at least a week to implement a disaster recovery plan – 5% said it would take two to three months.

As someone who works for the NCC Group, I can personally attest to this fear. However, this is how technology is moving - more to services, less-in house. Eventually it'll make more sense to move to someone who does IaaS or PaaS as a specialty than to keep it in house.

A recent survey by analyst company Ovum found 74 per cent of IT activities within organisations are still performed by an in-house IT facility. Indeed, only 4 per cent of IT activities currently make use of cloud resources.

To be quite honest, the results are hardly surprising. Although the media keep on harping that all is well in the cloud, it is simply not true. Besides the bad press that is generated every time a major service suffers downtime, security remains a major concern. Until these concerns are addressed adoption will be gradual.
